1 OBJECTIVE 11/20: SWBAT classify early civilizations in the United States and discuss their development. PG. 70 Intro: Copy and answer the questions: 1)Who were the first people to live in the US? 2) How do you think the first people arrived in the US?

2 Key Terms Four Corners: A region where Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona meet. Adobe: Large houses made of sundried brick. Pueblos: Spanish word for village. Tribe: A group of people with the same customs, language, and rituals. Clan: A group of two or more related families.

3 Discovering New Land Land Bridge 10,000 years ago Glaciers covered oceans forming bridges Nomadic hunters crossed to North America from the Siberian Land Bridge (Asia to Alaska)

4 Adapting to New Land Searched for food Large animals died out Land bridges melted Learned to plant Built irrigation systems Domesticated animals

5 Anasazi - 1000 years ago -“The Ancient Ones” and “Cliff Dwellers” -Lived in Pueblos-adobe homes built along cliffs for protection Mesa Verde National Park- CO - Lived in common day “Four Corners” -Built roads leading to other villages -Known for clay pottery and baskets -No one knows how they disappeared

6 Sioux Originated in the Great Lakes Region and the Mid-West Reliant on hunting and gathering

7 Sioux Lived in teepees made of buffalo hide (good for a nomadic lifestyle) Relied heavily on buffalo for food, clothing, shelter

8 Sioux 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn (AKA: Custor’s Last Stand) - US military sent troops to force the Sioux out of their homeland. Sioux won battle because of their leadership- Chief Sitting Bull and Warrior Crazy Horse, large numbers, and knowledge of the land. 7 Sioux tribe exist today

9 Iroquois -500 years ago -People of the Long House -Lived in clans -Lived in common day NY state - Planted corn, squash, and beans: “Three Sisters” -Women were respected for their role as farmers -Men hunted deer and bears with bows and arrows
