Vocabulary and Concept Development EDI Standard: 1.4 Students will identify common roots and affixes derived from Greek and Latin and use this knowledge to analyze the meaning of complex words (e.g., international).

Learning Objective I will know common roots derived from Greek and Latin and use this knowledge to analyze the meaning of complex words.

Activating Prior Knowledge Have you heard the word metric? The root metr / meter means “measurement.” Can you see the root therm in thermos? The root therm means “heat.” Can you see the root metr in the Spanish word “metro” or in the English word meter?

Concept Development Root : The fundamental element of a word or form, exclusive of all affixes and inflectional phonetic changes. Root: The root is the part of the word that contains the basic meaning.

Concept Development metr : From the Greek word metron meaning “measure.”. therm : From the Greek word therme meaning “heat”. metr: Greek root meaning “measure.” therm : Greek root meaning “heat.”

Tell your partner what metr means. Metr is a Greek root meaning “measure.”

Tell your partner what therm means. Therm is a Greek root meaning “heat.”

Read the following Latin roots. metr / meter measure Greek therm heat Greek

Importance Have you ever been confused about a word and have not been able to figure out its meaning? Have you ever had to use knowledge of word meaning to figure out the meaning of a new or difficult word?

Skill Development Read these words: diameter geometry perimeter metronome symmetrical thermal thermometer thermostat

Read these definitions / synonyms:  a device for regulating heat  an instrument for measuring the temperature of person or place  a line passing through the center of a circle from one side to the other  Warm, hot, having to do with heat  a device that marks the beat for musicians  Area of mathematics that deals with lines, angles, and figures  similar in shape and size on opposite sides of a dividing line  the distance around a figure

Match the words with the correct definitions or synonyms: diameter geometry perimeter metronome symmetrical thermal thermometer thermostat  a device for regulating heat  an instrument for measuring the temperature of person or place  a line passing through the center of a circle from one side to the other  Warm, hot, having to do with heat  a device that marks the beat for musicians  Area of mathematics that deals with lines, angles, and figures  similar in shape and size on opposite sides of a dividing line  the distance around a figure

Answer these questions: 1.What is a root? 2.Does metr as in metric mean heat or measure ? 3.What does the root therm mean? 4.What is the root in biometric? 5.What does the root mean?

Identify the roots. diameter thermostat geometry thermometer metronome thermal symmetrical perimeter Guided Practice

Meaning in Context Use the words in the box to fill in the blanks in the following paragraph. perimeter thermometer geometry thermal When working outdoors in Alaska, the surveyors from Louisiana wore (1) ______________ underwear to preserve their body heat, but they were still cold. The morning that the (2) _________________ showed a temperature below zero, they put on extra layers of clothing, but they were still cold. These surveyors were smart they had studies (3) ________________ and knew how to correctly mark the boundaries of large pieces of land. They had no difficulty measuring the (4) __________________ of what they had marked. What they didn’t know was how to get used to the cold. thermal

Closure A root is – the part of the word that contains the basic meaning. metr means – metr is a Greek root meaning “measure” therm means – therm is a Greek root meaning “heat”

Independent Practice Match the bolded word with the best synonym: 1.measure the diameter a. curve b. circle c. line 2.a thermal system a. difficult b. heating c. grading 3.adjusted the thermostat a. sound b. light c. temperature 4.symmetrical parts a. intersecting b. similar c. cold 5. using a metronome a. timekeeper b. metal bar c. musical instrument

Extension Kilo and milli (which appear with meter) are meaningful word parts. In the metric measuring system kilo- (from Greek for thousand) means “one thousand” and milli- (from Latin for thousand) means “one part of one thousand.” A kilometer is 1000 meters. A millimeter is 1/1000 of a meter. Among the words in this lesson are perimeter, diameter, and thermometer. Meter is a meaningful part of many other words too. Match each “meter” word in column 1 with what it could measure in column 2. 1.__ speedometer 2.__ kilometer 3.__ millimeter 4.__ barometer 5.__ milligram 6.__ kiloliter 7.__ kilogram 8.__ milliliter a.miles per hour in a car b.distance between cities c.water in a swimming pool d.the weight of a person e.a line less than a centimeter long f.weight of a paper clip g.the liquid in a medicine dropper h.atmospheric pressure for predicting the weather a b e h f c d g
