1 Vocabulary and Concept Development EDI Standard: 1.4 Students will identify common roots and affixes derived from Greek and Latin and use this knowledge to analyze the meaning of complex words (e.g., international).

3 Activating Prior Knowledge Have you heard the word transportation? The word transportation has the prefix trans-. Can you see the prefix inter- in intermediate? What does intermediate mean?

4 Concept Development inter- : Latin prefix meaning between or among: the second element of the compound is singular in form. trans- : Latin prefix meaning on the other side of, to the other side of, over, across, or through. inter- : Prefix from Latin meaning “between.” trans- : Prefix from Latin meaning “across.”

5 Tell your partner what the prefix inter- means. The prefix inter- comes from Latin meaning “between.”
