Nigeria Blood and Oil

Objectives Identify Nigeria on a blank map of Africa. Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of Nigeria’s main source of wealth. Describe the activities of Boko Haram. Describe the north-south divide in Nigeria.

Terms and People Boko Haram is a Muslim terrorist group in Nigeria. Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria. multi-ethnic means that the area has many cultural groups. Hausa-Fulani is the northern group in Nigeria. Yoruba is the southwestern group in Nigeria. Igbo is the southeastern group in Nigeria.

Nigeria Just to the east, Africa’s coast turns south Large desert nations of Africa lie just to the north. Nigeria is the largest West African nation on coast. One might say that Nigeria is in the armpit of Africa. Atlantic Ocean Indian Ocean

What does this map reveal about the population of Nigeria? Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa. Nigeria, in fact, has the eighth largest population in the world.

Hausa-Fulani is the largest ethnic group in Nigeria and lives in the north. They are primarily Muslim. They are most often the victims of the terrorist group Boko Haram.

Igbo is the southeastern group in Nigeria.

Yoruba is the southwestern group in Nigeria. They tend to be Christian. They tend to be city-dwellers, and make up the majority of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos.

Lagos lies in Nigeria’s southwest, on the coast. Lagos has a modern city center surrounded by slums. The slums extend out onto the water.

Where is the wealth in Nigeria? Where is the worst agricultural land in Nigeria? What might this map reveal about health in Nigeria? What might all three of these maps lead you to think about Nigeria? The oil found in the river delta is one of Nigeria’s great source of wealth.

Nigeria is a multi- ethnic country. However, Nigeria votes along a north- south divide. The north is out of power, just as it is out of wealth. Boko Haram is a Muslim group. Nigeria suffers from attacks from a terrorist group called Boko Haram.

In 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 girls from a school. They still have not returned to their homes. Boko Haram has killed thousands of people in Nigeria. The Nigerian army has been accused of excessive force against northern villages, whom they accuse of helping Boko Haram.

The oil in the south has brought widespread pollution as well as wealth.
