5 What’s unique about specific countries? •
We are going to talk about, and focus on, the following countries; –South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Rwanda, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, Kenya, Nigeria and Chad!

6 South Africa •Borders both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
•Located at the southern tip of Africa! •Borders both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. •History of the country has caused problems between the racially mixed country! •It’s climate is generally temperate and includes all the variations of African regions, desert to rainforest!

7 Zimbabwe •Landlocked country in Southeast Africa with its southern border on South Africa! •Has a very tropical climate that is regulated by altitude, or height!

8 Tanzania •Mt. Kilimanjaro is located here!
•An east African country whose eastern border is the Indian Ocean! •Mt. Kilimanjaro is located here! •As well as Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika. •Contains several wildlife parks, including the Serengeti Plain and Gombe Park; where Jane Godall studied chimpanzee's

9 Rwanda •Is just south of the equator!
•Is a tiny landlocked country in east-central Africa; is bordered by both Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo. •Is just south of the equator! •Contains grasslands and mountains, even a chain of volcanoes! •Known as the “land of a thousand hills”

Mozambique •Southeast African country bordered by the Mozambique Channel (Indian Ocean) on the east! •It was explored by Vasco da Gama in 1498

11 Democratic Republic of Congo
•Located in Central Africa, with a tiny arm that extends out to the Atlantic Ocean! •The 3rd largest country in all of Africa and the largest country in central Africa. •Contains a large portion of the Congo River! •Congo means “hunter” •Because of its location on the equator it gets a ton of rain –making it a tropical climate.

Ghana •West African country that borders Cote d’Ivorie, formerly the Ivory Coast! •Just north of the equator. •Its climate is very tropical!

13 Mali •It name means “hippopotamus”!
•A landlocked nation in western Africa that also borders the Cote d’Ivorie. •It name means “hippopotamus”! •Mostly flat with subtropical to arid climate. •Most of the country lies in the Sahara!

14 Mauritania •A country in northwest Africa that is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west! •It is generally flat and about ¾ of the country is covered by desert or semi arid climate! •Contains El Djouf, or "Empty Quarter," a vast region of large sand dunes that merges into the Sahara Desert.

15 Sierra Leone •West African country that is bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. •Is a diverse country in that has beaches all the way to rainforests! •Was an important center during the transatlantic slave trade!

16 Sudan & South Sudan •A northeast African country bordered by Egypt to the north and the Red sea to the northeast. •This is a mostly flat country broken up by mountain ranges. The Nile river flows through BOTH…Where does it begin? •An election was held in January 2011 to decide if they should divide the country into two parts. The country was officially divided in July 2011.

17 Egypt •The Nile River delta is there! •Home of the ancient pyramids!
•Northeast African country bordered by the Mediterranean sea to the North and the Red sea to the northeast! •The Nile River delta is there! •Home of the ancient pyramids! •Receives the least rainfall in the world!

18 Ethiopia •Contains the Ethiopian Highlands!
•East African country on the “horn of Africa” that is landlocked and bordered by Somalia to the east. •Contains the Ethiopian Highlands! •Contains three major climatic zones because of it’s elevation!

19 Libya •North African country that is bordered on the east by Egypt and to the north by the Mediterranean sea! •Much of southern Libya exhibits desert like conditions while the north sees more Mediterranean climates!

20 Kenya •The Indian Ocean is its southeast border!
•An east African country bordered by Somalia and Ethiopia to the north and northeast! •The Indian Ocean is its southeast border! •Climate ranges from tropical to arid!

21 Nigeria •Has the largest population of any African country.
•The Niger river runs through the country. •Ethnic conflicts have caused challenges since independence from Great Britain. •Oil dominates the economy yet many of the people are poor.

22 Chad •North central African country that is landlocked with Libya to the north and Sudan to the east! •It is widely covered by desert and often referred to as the “Dead heart of Africa”! •From north to south you would experience the following 3 regions: Desert, Sahel and Savanna!
