4 TOPIC 1: NIGERIA IN BROAD OUTLINE
CONTENT LOCATION Nigeria is located in a fairly central position in Africa. It lies approximately between latitude 40N and 140N of the equator and longitude 30E and 150E of the Greenwich Meridian. The latitudinal extent or stretch of Nigeria is about 100 (140N-40N) while the longitudinal extent or stretch is 120 (150E-30E).

5 POSITION Except for the Atlantic ocean to the south, Nigeria is surrounded by French-speaking countries. Its coastal boundary is delimited by the Gulf of Guinea in the south and the land boundary is shared by Cameroun and Chad in the east, Niger in the north and Benin in the west.

6 SIZE Nigeria is the fourth largest country in West Africa in terms of land area after Niger, Mali and Mauritania. It occupies 1/7 of the land area of West and it is three times the size of Ghana. Nigeria covers a total land area of 923,768 square kilometres. The greatest distance from east to west is approximately 1,300km while from north to south is about 1,100km. The population estimate of Nigeria in 2014 is put at 178,571,721 people.

8 POLITICAL DIVISION OF NIGERIA
Nigeria came into existence in 1914. It became independent in 1960 with 3 regions- north, east and west. In 1963, Nigeria became a Republic with the creation of mid-west as the fourth region. Nigeria was divided into 12 states in 1967, 19 states in 1976, 21 states in 1987, 30 states in 1991 and 36 states in 1997. The federal capital of Nigeria is Abuja.

9 ETHNIC GROUPS IN NIGERIA
The population of Nigeria is made up of about 250 ethnic groups. The major ethnic groups are Hausa-Fulani (29%) in the north, the Yoruba (21%) in the south west, the Igbo (18%) in the south east and the Ijaw (10%) in the Niger Delta, Kanuri (4%), Ibibio (3.5%) and Tiv (2.5%).

10 ASSIGNMENT Using a 20cm by 20cm card board paper, draw the outline map of Nigeria. On your outline, name and locate: The Gulf of Guinea. The Bight of Bonny. The French countries that share boarder with Nigeria. Latitude 14oN and 40N. Longitude 80E and 150E
