Application for a SRTRC Grant Before completing the application form, please ensure you have read the accompanying information on this form and the SRTRC Brochure. Use additional sheets if required. NB: Bank details MUST be provided on this form if you wish to receive a SRTRC Action Grant. Bank details Name of account: Pilmeny Youth Centre – Treasurers Account Bank: Bank of Scotland, 61 Leith Walk, EH6 8LS Sort code: ** ** ** Account number: ********* Please give details of the project you wish to run: - A two day project based on teaching basic football skills to children of primary school age. One day will be dedicated to girl’s football; the other will be a provision for boys. Both events will have an educational input based on raising awareness of the Fortnight of Action and Anti-Racism What are the aims of the project? We aim to bring together young people from the local youth agencies that provide a social/recreational service to all sections of the wider Leith area including Muslim, Sikh and Hindu Communities. It will also be our aim to target young people from the Polish and Eastern European communities who may feel under-represented within our community youth organizations. How will this project benefit the local community? Our Fortnight of Action project held in 2005 was very successful and allowed local youth agencies to advance the social/recreational services to young people via a variety of partnership projects that had brought together the youth providers and young people last October. We wish to further advance this good work by providing another Fortnight of Action event which will bring together the young people from the above communities who we feel will benefit most. What date will your project start and finish? Wednesday 18 October and Thursday 19 th October 2006 How many people will benefit from your project? Approx 30 young people aged 9 – 12yrs Please give a breakdown of the participants of the project: - The format for this year’s event will be significantly different from last years and will be dependent on the response from the various communities and genders. But, we are confident that we shall reach our target figure 30 young person. What other organisations will be involved in organising, delivering or funding this project? City of Edinburgh will provide venue, Pilmeny Youth Centre/Redpath Albion BC will organise the administration and the event programme and also deliver football coaching and equipment, Sikh Sanjog, Dosti Muslim Groups, Citadel Youth Centre, Fort Youth Wing and local primary schools will all provide participants and staff support as well as educational input. Local businesses will also be encouraged to supply free refreshments such as fruit, bottled water etc. This will be used to assist with re-hydration and recovery/rest periods during the educational segment of the event. How will this project be sustained in the future? The event is aimed at breaking down the possible cultural barriers that may exist within the wider Leith community. To sustain this, local youth agencies will encourage participants, who are not already attached to a local youth club, to become involved with the club nearest their location. It is also hoped that a positive and firmer relationship will develop between local young people and that future events will be held via the network of agencies involved.

After the success of last years three-day event it was eagerly agreed that a joint project involving local youth agencies based in Leith, Edinburgh, would be held in The FREE event, funded by ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ would bring together young people to promote positive relationships and improve understanding of local cultures Our Programme comprising of ‘tasters’ in football coaching, light fitness and healthy lifestyles as well as a variety of fun activities to run in tandem with educational input based on an Anti-Racism theme, were very well received over the two days. Two key elements were introduced, not included in last years event, was the participation of a number of young ladies from the Sikh community and boys from the large, recently arrived, Polish Community now resident in Leith. The award of a grant from SRTRC = £616 allowed us to employ SFA Qualified Soccer Coaches and to pay for the venue and material and refreshment costs. We are indebted to the City of Edinburgh Council, “Community Learning and Development” Edinburgh North and Leith, Youth and Children Work Team who provided additional funds for employing qualified youth work staff, and for the purchase of SRTRC promotional Merchandise Background Our thanks also to

A little bit of information about our groups:- Pilmeny Youth Centre, located at Buchanan Street in the Lorne/Pilrig ward of Leith serving the young people of the community and providing a variety of social and recreational activities. Part funded by the City of Edinburgh Council the centre’s evening youth provision is wide and varied. Founded in 1984 Juvenile and Amateur club formed in the late 50’s by the workforce of the local steelworks, Redpath Brown and Co, Albion Road, to provide football for works apprentices, the Boys Club was formed in 1988 to provide football and sporting activities for young people in the Lorne/Pilrig communities. SFA Qualified coaches work on a voluntary basis with the club’s U9-U10-U11-U15 and Amateur sections and current membership stands at 90+. Founded in 1957 Sikh Sanjog was set up in 1989 under the name of Leith Sikh Community Groups. At this stage, a number of Sikh families were receiving help from another of the voluntary organisations - "Leith Home Start", but they only catered specifically for families with children under the age of five years. It was realised that many Sikh women were isolated and because of culture, it was difficult for them to join any groups for social activities outwith their own religion. The boys group aims to encourage members to become actively involved in decision making and planning their own programme. Activities include football, pool, table tennis and outings. The centre offers all local children and young people a programme of play, activities and opportunities designed to encourage, develop and reinforce their skills and self-image in a safe and supportive environment. The centre promotes work with socially excluded children and young people experiencing difficulties and/or coming from a background of disadvantage.

Tuesday 18 th October pm – 4pm On arrival each participant was registered and introduced to the football coaches and staff, then following a quick presentation of ‘what the project was all about’ Football Coaching was facilitated on the football parks adjacent to the school. Young people years were given the opportunity to express their football skills under the expertise of the our SFA Credited football coaches. Fun games and a multi-cultural quiz based on sport, music and general knowledge was facilitated by the youth work staff which allowed the young participants to interact in teams of mixed culture. A short break was enjoyed and the young people ‘tucked’ into fresh fruit and nutritional snacks.

Wednesday 19 th October pm – 4pm Heavy overnight rain and morning showers failed to curb the enthusiasm. Our arranged 30 minute refreshment break, where the young people enjoyed another ‘feast’ of fresh fruit and healthy foods gave them time to view the ‘Safe Place’ video facilitated by the youth work staff and this activity was followed by a relaxed question and answer session. The event was visited by the sports correspondent from the Edinburgh Evening News, who attended to take some photographs. It was then on to small sided games with teams of mixed cultures. The day ended with the young people throwing out a challenge to play the staff. The day ended with all participants being given an Show Racism The Red Card T-Shirts and assorted SRTRC Promotional materials.

Stats, Stats and more Stats The success of the project can be measured in the attendance and enjoyment achieved by everyone who participated. Six paid staff, SFA Qualified coaches supplied by Redpath Albion/Pilmeny Youth Centre Sports Club, one youth worker from Citadel youth centre and one from Sikh Sanjog, were in attendance at all times and supplemented by staff from youth agencies involved with the project. A number of factors hampered the attendance numbers on both day’s. No members of the Muslim community were involved with the project. Reasons given were staffing issues, within their own group, and the fact that our project was taking place during fasting. The response from the Sikh Community was very favourable and members of the Sikh Sanjog Girls group enrolled for the project The weather on both days’ worked against the project and may have prevented some of the young people who had originally enrolled from attending the event. However, a dozen or so young people per day, did attend and their enjoyment of football skills and physical activity, together with the educational input facilitated by our very competent youth work team, ensured the event was a success.

Stats, Stats and more Stats Cont: A number of young people from the Eastern European community teamed up with local youngsters from youth agencies and members of Sikh Sanjog. A broad cross-section of young people representing the mix of cultures helped to break down cultural barriers and build new relationships.

In Addition Redpath Albion and Pilmeny Youth Centre Sports Club teamed up to facilitate a mini Multi Sports evening on Wednesday 25 th October. The event was held to celebrate the SRTRC ‘Fortnight of Action’ and was in addition to the youth centre’s successful sports group funded by the Big Lottery ‘Awards for All’ which is a twenty-six week project for local young people which ends in November The aims of the project are to offer an out- of-school, non-mainstream, minority sports facility promoting healthy lifestyles. Nine boys enjoyed “tasters” in Basketball – Unihoc – Badminton etc. The group of nine boys aged 8-12years, represents a blend of the many cultures living in the Lorne/Pilrig/Bonnington/Broughton and Calton areas’ of Leith.

Show Racism the Red Card Fortnight of Action Fortnight of Action Event Evaluation Form Thank you for your active involvement in the SRTRC Fortnight of Action In order that we can improve the Fortnight next year, could you please fill in the questionnaire below and it to Name of organiser:BRYAN MAUGHAN Phone: Name of project:REDPATH ALBION/PILMENY SPORTING CLUB Location:LEITH - EDINBURGH Name of project organisation:LEITH YOUTH UNITED AGAINST RACISM Location:PILMENY YOUTH CENTRE Aim of project:TO BRING TOGETHER YOUNG PEOPLE OF LEITH TO PROMOTE DIVERSE CULTURES 1. How did you find the application process? No problems with completing the application form. Can you think of any ways in which this could be improved? An online application would simplify the process even more and would allow organistion’s to give more detail on the project content. 2. Did you receive SRTRC resources for the event? YES If so, did the resources arrive in sufficient time and in the correct quantities? YES How were the resources used? To facilitate an educational input during the project, which contained quizzes based on the videos’ shown to the young people. Did they prove useful? YES Can you suggest any other resources that would be useful next year? NO

Was the payment of the grant suitable? The grant awarded was less than applied for. It covered venue fees, coach fees and materiel costs. The lack of an award for youth session staff presented the project with a problem as we relied heavily on this key element to facilitate the educational input based on the Anti-Racism theme. We were fortunate that the City of Edinburgh Council, Community Learning and Development team agreed to fund 50% of the cost of session staff. How could this be improved next year? 4. Publicity. What media coverage, if any, did your project receive? The Edinburgh Evening News gave the project space on its sports pages and also sent a photographer to the project. The photograph appeared in the paper and the News sports website. How did you publicise the event? The circulation of posters were displayed throughout the community. Redpath Albion Boys club and Pilmeny Youth Centre constructed web pages dedicated to the project and the SRTRC ‘Fortnight of Action. How could this be improved next year? 5. Any other suggestions on how the SRTRC Fortnight of Action grants scheme could be improved next year? 6. Did you submit a short News Report for: 1.the SRTRC website? 2.your organisations website? Yes. We also evaluated the project in greater detail by compiling a PowerPoint Slide show which has been distributed to all agencies concerned with the Leith project. A copy has also been sent to the SRTRC 7. Did you submit digital photos for: 1.the SRTRC website? 2.your organisations website? Yes. Details are on both sites. and 8. Did you add a link to the SRTRC ( website from your website? If not, please give your reasons. YES.
