1 Supporting Manufacturing Leadership Through Sustainability E3: Economy, Energy, and Environment

A comprehensive approach for establishing sustainable practices for manufacturers Coordinates services--local, state, and federal assistance to work with manufacturing base in local communities. Provides manufacturers with customized assessments, specific recommendations, and customized workforce training in applicable “green” skill sets. Promotes sustainable manufacturing and growth through innovation and access to affordable capital to support needed new systems/equipment. Improves the regional economy by retaining jobs Reduces environmental impacts while regaining a competitive advantage. 22 What is E3?

A Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Evaluation that teaches manufacturers how to calculate GHG emissions and evaluate reduction strategies. 33 E3 Technical Assessments A Lean and Green Review which leads to increased productivity and reduced costs, reductions in water use, materials and energy. Post-Assessment Recommendations that guide each facility toward improvements in overall efficiency, reduced waste, more efficient use of resources including energy and water, and cost savings. An Energy Assessment which provides tools and insight to reduce energy demand and costs.

E3 Project: Southeast Michigan 55 PRIVATE Detroit Edison (DTE) Consumers Energy New Economy Initiative of SE Michigan (NEI) Comprehensive list of 49 companies developed 10 companies recommended by DTE PUBLIC MDNRE, EPA & NIST DOE, SBA, DOL MMTC-Plymouth Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce DELEG, U of M IAC, SBTDC, SME, et al. Funding for SE Michigan: DTE, Consumers Energy, the New Economy Initiative of Southeast Michigan, and the Industrial Assessment Center (U of M) are supporting initial assessments.

What is Success? The impact of E3 from a manufacturer: “ The impact reaches far beyond energy, dollars, or the environment. It is about people and community. When TMAC conducted our E3 assessment last we had 100 people employed on the floor. We are now up to 200 employees with plans to grow to 240. Every dollar that we don’t have to spend on wasted energy or materials is one more dollar that we have available to invest in our workforce. That has a direct impact on the quality of life for our local community.” – Linda Jordan, CFO of UEMC San Antonio, Texas
