The Solution: Overview

The Solution: Overview A Desire2Learn® Capture solution consists of 2 major components: 1. Capture Station(s) Station 400 (hardware and software) Capture Desktop Software (software only) 2. Capture Portal Hosting (on cloud) Server Software (on-premise)

Capture: Functionality Functions: Webcast, Record, Publish Presentation types: Rich media, Video, Screencast First Screen

Capture: Station 400 Complete hardware and software solution Designed for equipping rooms with dedicated stations, or deployment on a media cart Uses H.264 video codec (high quality, low bitrate) A/V inputs built into the back of the station (1 video, 1 audio, 1 VGA screen) Stations can be automated, using web scheduler Capture Station 400

Capture: Software Use cases: Personal version = optimized for capture on laptop. Pro version = create your own Capture Station 400, with automation capability. Screen sharing options: Can capture local desktop, upload PPT, or capture external screen source with Epiphan device. A/V: Anything Flash-supported, usually USB webcam/mic if using a laptop. Output: Also supports high-quality h.264 codec. Capture Software

Screen Sharing Capture Station: Screen is captured through VGA cable. Any external screen source with a VGA output can be captured (e.g. doc camera, projector…) Capture Software: Screen is captured through local desktop capture, or can present a PPT/DOC/PDF file. External screen source can captured through third-party Epiphan device (e.g. VGA2USB, DVI2USB). Recorded output: Images mode: Best when presenting static content (e.g. PPT slides), as it creates a great Table of Contents with slide previews for on-demand viewing. Video mode: Best for presenting continuous animation or video clips.

New: Web Capture add-on Lightweight, web-based version of our Capture software Instructor can be given URL to launch Web Capture in their browser (cross-platform), and use their webcam and a PPT file to conduct a webcast or recording. Great for cases where instructor does not have access to Capture Station / Software (e.g. remote) Web Capture is accessible via the Capture Portal (as an add-on feature)

Capture: Uploader Application Can use Uploader application to publish externally-created videos to a Capture Portal. Videos must be in H.264 format (mp4/f4v). Post-production editor may be used to upload and synchronize PowerPoint files.

Capture Scenarios Dedicated Hardware Software Web-based Capture Capture Station 400 Web-based Capture Video Import The Four Use Cases All use cases offer the benefit of multimedia capabilities where you are able to consume audio, video and presentation content or screen capture. Dedicated Hardware – This is the solution ideally suite for Lecture Capture in larger venues such as lecture halls or events. The Capture Station offers the ability to have automated scheduling or recording times, so presenters can focus on their content rather than technology. Software – This solution is optimized for use with a laptop and webcam. Ideal for a video blogging scenario or for other person capture and sharing scenarios. 3) Web Capture – The scenario addresses the need for the capturing of content a from a remote presenter. Web Capture is accessible via the Capture Portal (as an add-on feature) as a lightweight, web-based version of Capture software. Great for cases where instructor does not have access to Capture Station / Software. The web-based scenario is also a solution that can be used to address the capture student created content for assignments or even remote student presentations. 4) Capture Toolbox (video uploader tool) – This final scenario involves the importing videos to utilize in the same context as live captured content.

Portal: Presentation Portal

Portal: Admin Console

Embedding onto Other Websites Embeddable area of presentation Embed HTML Code

Integration with Learning Environment Embedding Learning Environment Viewing Options Where the users viewing the content can be just as relevant as the content itself… Embedding – Rather that having users go to the capture portal you can embed the code in the sites they are already using. This means users stay in the environment that they are already familiar with to consume the content. Learning Environment Integration – When the target audience is existing Learning Environment users the content is easily consumable through their courses. We make it easy for instructors to insert presentations into their course content. Sessions are permissions based so it’s easy to find recorded content by course rather than searching all recordings. Integration with Learning Environment and ePortfolio

Portal: Post-Production Post-production features available via web-based application:

Portal: Post-Production Can upload closed captioning scripts (subtitles) in SRT format through the post-production editor, for playback in on-demand webcasts.

Portal: Optical Character Recognition Run automatically upon publishing. Takes screenshots/slides that were captured as images, and converts whatever text it can find into searchable metadata. Can use built-in OCR service, or configure to a preferred third- party service.

Portal: On-Demand Features Search within the presentation (Can also search Portal-wide) Table of Contents (e.g. Chapters, Slide Titles) Viewing options (e.g. Side-by-Side, Picture-in-Picture)

New : Flexible Media Delivery In addition to Flash streaming (live and on-demand), viewers can now access recordings via direct download (mp3/mp4), progressive download (HTML5), and RSS Excellent solution for poorly connected or mostly disconnected (mobile) clients Also allows for support of third party publishing (CD/DVD, Kaltura, iTunes U, YouTube, etc).

New: Mobile Playback On-demand recordings can now be viewed on mobile devices (including iPhone, iPad, Android Phone, Android Tablet, BlackBerry) using HTML5 progressive download. A mobile UI for the Capture Portal website is now available for users on mobile devices.

Integration with iTunes U Post-processed CaptureCast recordings (mp3/mp4) are available as RSS feeds compatible with iTunes and iTunes U. Can access RSS feed for entire Portal, or for individual folders within the Portal.

What’s Next Some exciting next developments include: October CaptionSync Integration Self-Serve Closed Captioning Granular Access Control to Capture Portal content Pre/post rolls Mac version of Capture desktop software (recording-only) March Phase 2 of Learning Environment Integration
