3 What is Desire2Learn Capture? University of Toronto research project to address the need for remote students to feel present during lectures Complete solution to presentation capture and rich media webcasting. Rich Media = e.g., Speaker video, audio and presentation slides/desktop. Webcasting = one-to-many streaming to multiple viewers online. Scalable, cost effective and robust.

13 Making Traditional Capture Better: Student-focused Platform Features Letting the student focus on what matters to them Simple player with on-mouse-over controls Swap video and screen, picture-in-picture, etc. Letting the student find what matters to them Auto-generated table of contents with thumbnail previews Streaming allows for quick navigation with no buffering Can search for keywords found in screen text, etc.

14 Making Traditional Capture Better: Student-focused Platform Features Search within the presentation (Can also search Portal-wide) Table of Contents (e.g. Chapters, Slide Titles) Viewing options (e.g. Side-by-Side, Picture-in-Picture)

15 Making the Most Out of Classroom Time Flipping the classroom / Use of pre-made video clips Enables more discussion, worked examples, case studies or problem- solving into your face-to-face teaching. Adjust lecture style, as students no longer need to keep up with note taking. Faster pace Less notes on black/whiteboard More discussion

16 Creative Use: Using Video Recording to Improve Student Performance University of Toronto course, “Communication Skills for Computer Science Students” Students made elevator pitches and various presentations in class, and were recorded each time Increases in performance were facilitated by Video-assisted self assessment Asynchronous discussion and feedback with TA

17 Using Video Recording to Improve Student Performance, cont. Students watched their performance and used Capture’s time-linked comments feature to make note of what they did well and what they could improve on. Further reinforcement was provided by the TA who did the same. TA also responded to student’s self-assessment with feedback and suggestions.

18 Creative Use: Showcasing Student Projects and Work Poudre School District Emphasis on showcasing as much student work as possible. Have a production studio students can be filmed in, or can film students in classroom, etc. Recordings are available on ‘Channel 10’, PSD’s Capture Portal. Students love that they can watch what they produce. Most popular recordings: Student Newscasts, and Music Rhythms series.

19 Creative Use: Fostering Digital Fluency Poudre School District Class visits to Channel 10 production studio for demonstrations or special class projects. Teach videography and editing using A/V and software. Opportunities for students to be "freelance" video producers and assist in all stages of video/web production for teacher and school projects.

20 Creative Use: Showcasing Student-Generated Content Ryerson University Ryecast is Ryerson’s version of YouTube, where they can allow staff and students to upload their own content to the Capture Portal. Also used Capture’s extensibility features to add a ‘channels’ widget to the Capture Portal, which gives a visual overview of all the different Portals there are for different groups.

21 Creative Use: Combining Conferencing & Webcasting Ontario Poison Centre Staff does shift work, but wanted to be involved in rounds. Needed to provide side-by-side video and slides, and high-quality publishing of live recordings BUT, also needed to have multiple remote presenters in different hospitals and locations.

22 Combining Conferencing & Webcasting..cont. Polycom video conferencing used between hospital locations Capture records the Polycom conference re-broadcasts it out as a live webcast over the web browser for those attending from home. Staff loved that they could see everything going on in the room, as well as in the other hospital rooms, and the system fit their own schedule (i.e. live or on-demand) Staff are more active in educational activities.
