Analyse how effective recruitment contributes to an organisation’s success D2 Explain the main objectives of Tesco Describe the recruitment process Hannah had to follow when she applied for the job at Tesco Why is it important for Tesco to produce a job description and person specification before they advertise the post? What might be the consequences if they did not produce these documents? Explain why the interview process is effective for Tesco and how it will help the company achieve its objectives Analyse the alternative methods Tesco could have used and explain why the company do not use them

D2 1. Tesco Objectives To create value and choice for customers to earn their lifetime loyalty To grow the core UK business To expand internationally and focus on giving local customers what they want To be as strong in non-food products (eg clothes, DVD and CD’s)

2. Recruitment Process at Tesco D2 Look for a local store advertising for vacancies Complete an application form (from Tesco website) Take the form to the local store that is recruiting Attend interview: tour of store, meet staff, interview with team leader, group activity answering questions, work shadowing employee on the till

3. Advantages of using a Job Description and Person Specification Easier to short list the applications – check person has necessary skills and qualifications Ensures person interviewing assesses the applicant accurately Meets equal opportunities laws – fair treatment of all applicants regardless of age, gender, race, disability Reduces chance of legal action by applicants

4. Consequences if a JD and PS were not produced Could employ someone with the wrong qualities and characteristics Could impact on sales and profit Costly to dismiss an employee for incompetence Company could get sued if equal opportunity laws are not followed Could result in court action Affects the image and reputation of the supermarket

5. Why the interview process is effective D2 Look for local store – only get applicants where they are needed locally Apply via website – convenient for applicants, saves on postage for Tesco Group exercise – can compare all the applicants together in one group Individual interview – better for people who are shy Work shadowing – applicant can experience the job first hand

Alternative Methods Tesco could use References: School do not know applicant in a supermarket situation Referee may be biased (give an example) Aptitude Tests: Ability in maths and English not as important as personality and being able to work in a team

Homework: Visit your local Tesco store and complete the questionnaire, assessing whether or not Tesco’s recruitment strategy works effectively. D2

Add a conclusion to D2: Based on your observations, do you think the recruitment process at Tesco is effective?
