What is a STUDY GUIDE? Dr. Sullivan (WCMS, 8th Grade Science) Mr. O’Keefe (WMCS, 6th Grade Social Studies)

Take-Aways... (1)What a study guide is and is not (2)How to use a study guide using class materials (don’t reinvent the wheel!) (3)Teacher-made examples (4)Student-made examples (5)Things to do after making a study guide to reinforce

(1)Study guides DO: Take a variety of forms but are all designed to assist the student in preparing for an assessment Serve as the framework from which the student generates a body of material to study and apply Exist for students at the beginning of a unit and can be a helpful means of organizing material as it is presented in class.

(1)Study Guides DON’T Provide “answers” or practice questions for a quiz/test Replace extra help if it is needed for organization or asking clarifying questions Tell students exactly what they will be asked about a topic (in the upper grades - some 6th, 7th and 8th) Exist for every class (e.g. math)

(2)Using the Study Guide [ I ] Use the study guide to LOCATE information in class materials (reading, notes, homework - nothing should be “learned” as new here) [ II ] Do something ACTIVE with the information (make your own study guide, online or paper note cards) - we will show samples of these in a bit [ III ] REVIEW in short but meaningful spurts two nights out from a quiz/test

(3)6th Grade Foreign LanguageTeacher Example:

(3)6th Grade Social Studies Teacher Example:

(3)8th Grade Science Teacher Example:

(4)Student-Made Example:

(5)Reinforcement AFTER making a study guide Peer review: Have your student exchange study guides with a classmate to help identify important content Application: Have your student develop examples from the content of the study guide Reinforcement: Online quizzes, flash cards, animations, and tutorials may supplement the student’s study guide

(5)Reinforcement AFTER making a study guide, cont: Examples: Quizlet Quia Sample site for animations
