What is BYOD? BYOD stands for “Bring Your Own Device.” BYOD is an initiative that will allow students who have personal technology devices to bring them to school to use them for educational purposes to meet their learning needs under the direction of a teacher or administrator. Hilder Road State School has chosen the iPad for this device.

What are the benefits of BYOD? Our students are living in a world where they have immediate access to information anytime and anywhere. Having the device at all times means familiarity and improved productivity.

Specific Benefits include: Allows for personalised learning Improved collaboration Gives students’ greater choice and more independence It creates a model for lifelong learning Provides transition between school and high school/tertiary education and future workplaces Provides easier student access to online instructional materials Supplements school resources and equipment Normalisation of technology

What Device is Required? The minimum standard required for the iPad classes has been determined as iPad 4 (Retina Display) with the recommendation being the iPad Air 16gb hard-drive is the standard, but you may wish to purchase one with a larger HDD The WiFi version is required, NOT the 3G/4G device as sim cards will not be accepted This is to ensure that the device will be able to be used across an intended 3 year cycle

Device Requirements Any device which is to be used as part of a BYOD program will need to be registered (serial number) with the school. Students are responsible for their devices and both the student and parent are required to read and accept the Acceptable Use Policy It will also be required that some apps be preloaded and iTunes credit be available for further purchases through out the year A quality case and possibly a stylus will be recommended Cluster uniformity of device across schools

ICTs – Current Status Installation of IWBs in every classroom. (Airserver) Teachers all have iPads to develop necessary skills. Ongoing mentoring and support by key staff to improve ICT competencies across the school. Provide information and opportunities for staff to engage in online learning environments. ICT and eLearning events within the cluster and region available to staff. Provision of curriculum support materials to staff. Cyberbullying and Cybersafety lessons have been conducted over the years for upper school students Class set of iPads available Dedicated computer lab and classroom PCs Bandwidth – 4Mbps $10,000 per year (10Mbps - $20,000 per year!)

ICTs – Current Status (cont) Creation of ICT Coordinator role to support teachers in their use of ICTs in teaching and learning. (this role has been in place at HRSS for over 10 years!) Consistent approach to planning, including the utilisation of ICTs. Expectation that staff will develop ICT skills. Support and expectation of teachers to use a virtual learning space (Virtual Classroom and edStudios). Ongoing mentoring and support to improve ICT competencies across the school. ICT resources and learning spaces available to all classes through online booking system.

What about security, theft and damage to the device? Devices will be the responsibility of the student. The school will accept no responsibility for the security or safety of the device. Devices will be locked in classrooms during class time and at break time. Parents will be advised to review their insurance policies to ensure that BYOD devices are covered outside the home, and to provide a suitable protective bag and cover for the device. There will be a limited number of backup devices available during short term repair periods.

How will devices be connected to the school network? Students will be provided with wireless access on the BYOD network after they register their devices having returned their signed AUP. Parents will be required to provide any passcodes to access the devices for use at school. Technical support will be provided to ensure that students can access the secured wireless network. 3G connection will not be allowed. WiFi devices only will be accepted as part of this trial.

What filtering will be provided when students connect their own device/s? The standard filter which is currently provided on the school network will apply to student owned devices as long as they connect to the school network in line with the AUP.

Charging It will be compulsory that personally owned devices are brought into school with a full charge. Students will be made aware that the school is not responsible to provide an opportunity or the necessary power to charge their device during the school day, although limited charging opportunities will be available.

What happens if a student uses a device inappropriately? The AUP and Behaviour Policies will outline the sanctions for inappropriate use of devices and network. Students and their parents will be required to sign agreements that these policies will be adhered to and that consequences of policy breaches are understood before network access is provided. These documents will be accessible on the school website. Cybersafety lessons will be conducted in class to increase awareness.

How much of the time will students be using their own device? The amount of time a student spends on a device will depend on the lesson intent and objective. As a guide it is expected that the devices will be used for approximately 25-50% of learning time in the first year. Students will not be using the device 100% of the day.

What support will be provided for parents? It is intended that we establish a simple to find and use parent portal on our school website that provides articles and tips on ICT and other school related items. iPad class teachers will also be available to assist through the regular contact channels. (email and appointment). If any parents have expertise that they are willing to share we are more than happy to incorporate this knowledge.

Things to remember… This is a proposal and will not proceed without sufficient support from parents. Even if the proposal proceeds, it will not apply to all students. Other classes will make use of school iPads and other devices. This would be a trial for us too! We will need your support as this will be a home and school device.
