1 BYOx 2019

2 Topics Why consider BYOx? How does BYOx work at this school? Student and parent responsibilities.

3 What is BYOx? BYOx describes a digital device ownership model where students or staff use their privately owned devices to access the network and information systems at school.

4 The ‘x’ in BYOx refers to:
the device the software the applications the connectivity or carriage service.

5 A BYOx program promotes:
Skills for 21st century Responsible digital citizenship Staff and students investigating, creating and communicating using information communication technologies (ICTs) operating with ICTs effectively and efficiently Engagement in learning. Suggestion: A BYOx program equips students with the skills they require to live work and play in 21st century enables students to become responsible digital citizens immerses staff and students in investigating, creating and communicating using ICT enables staff and students to manage and operate with ICTs effectively and efficiently improves student engagement.

6 How BYOx works at Morayfield High?
Through Education QLD and Telstra a Cisco Concierge Box is installed on the school network to manage the program Student completes the BYOx Charter Agreement Form and submits to the Cashier Student takes the signed form to the Technician in G Block to organise connecting their device to the network Up to three devices may be connected per student

7 Support at school Technical support will be available for the connection to the network and installation of school provided software. Support will not be available for hardware or other issues The school has upgraded the wi-fi network to provide access to every classroom

8 Choice of Devices Recommended device is a laptop
If your student is in a Junior class or does not take any IT/Media or Graphics classes any basic laptop with meet their needs at school If the student studies IT, Graphics or Media subjects an i5 processor or greater is recommended. A tablet will suffice for basic needs but consider a keyboard accessory A smart phone is not really suitable due to the small screen size

9 Where to buy? Local Stores Harvey Norman Micro Ed The Good Guys
JB HiFi Ed’s Computers Dick Smith Electronics Officeworks Web portals for BYOx (See website for links)

10 Software Microsoft Office 365 – 5 Licenses available free of charge
Adobe Design Suite – Full suite available – Standard FREE AutoCAD – Free installation supplied if in a Graphics Class AntiVirus – Required (Any version is fine)

11 Security: Access to the internet
user authentication required (user name and password) ‘Galactic’ filtering allows filters to be applied at a very specific level. Schools are able to match appropriate web content to different year levels and users. school level access restrictions apply.

12 Student and parent responsibilities

13 Security: Access to the internet when not on the school’s network
sole responsibility of parent/family. school filters do not apply when not on the school’s network. home access is determined by the parent/family. Devices with 3G/4G

14 Agreements Parents and students: read and sign the BYOx charter
endorse the acceptable use agreement.

15 Device security, theft and damage
Parents and students are responsible for device security, care and maintenance so need to consider factors such as: virus protection is mandatory for connection to the school’s network protective bag/case storage when not in use accidental damage insurance theft and loss insurance. Devices are the responsibility of the student. The school accepts no responsibility for the security or safety of personally owned devices. A suitable protective bag should be provided for the device. Devices will be stored in (location) when not in use. Parents are advised to take out accidental damage insurance cover or review their insurance policies to ensure that BYOx devices are covered.

16 Warranty Battery charging accidents happen warranty period?
replacement device? battery life? who is responsible? WHS Battery charging While research shows that students take much better care of a device which belongs to them than a school provided device, accidents do happen. Warranty will depend on what BYOx model the school has chosen, where the device was purchased, and what arrangements have been established with the vendor. A three-year warranty is recommended but warranty terms will vary depending on how robust the device is – a balancing act between length of warranty and quality of device. All personally owned devices brought into the school must be fully charged.

17 Inappropriate device use
consequences restrictions to use of device and school network access Responsible Behaviour Plan.

18 Current Issues Android V8.x Updating of software
