2 VERIZON INNOVATIVE LEARNING SCHOOL DIRECTED BY DIGITAL PROMISE Digital Promise is a non-profit organization with a goal of improving the opportunity to learn for all Americans through technology and research. Digital Promise has partnered with Verizon to provide tablets to schools in the U.S. Holcomb Bridge was chosen as one of 21 U.S. middle schools to receive the grant that is providing iPads for all teachers and students for the purpose of improving 21st century learning opportunities. 3 SO HOW WILL THESE IPADS EFFECT LEARNING AT HBMS? Key phrase: Always available access for everyone! Digital resources Ability to create in more creative and relevant ways Easy and meaningful collaboration

4 BEFORE IPADS ARE ISSUED Students completed a comprehensive digital citizenship unit during HAWK30 consisting of 5 lessons. Students learned about internet safety, cyberbullying, online scams, copyright laws and expectations, etc. Each student completed a Digital Passport to show their mastery of these lessons. Digital Citizenship curriculum will be ongoing throughout the year with monthly lessons in Hawk 30.

5 ISSUING STUDENT IPADS After student, parent, and teacher education and trainings are complete, students will be issued an iPad for the school year. The roll-out event during which iPads will be issued will take place on Saturday, October 3. Parents/guardians must be present with student in order for the student to receive his or her iPad. Parents will turn in signed agreements and receive all necessary information and assistance. The roll-out event will be a community-wide celebration that will include games, food, music, inflatables, and more.

6 ABOUT STUDENT IPADS Every iPad will come with a case and charger. Every student iPad will come with 5 gigs of data per month. If a student goes over their data, the iPad will not work for programs that require data until the next month begins. Tip: Students should be connected to WiFi as often as possible to preserve their data. Students are expected to come to school each day with a fully-charged iPad. Tip: Keep charger in parent bedroom and plug it in every night- that way it's getting charged and student is not up late at night on the device.

7 WHAT IF AN IPAD IS DAMAGED? All parents have the option of purchasing insurance for their student's iPad. Insurance options can be selected at either of the following sites: http://www.safeware.com http://www.worthavegroup.com If a student iPad is not insured and is damaged, the parents will be responsible for covering the cost of that damage.

8 KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE Talk to your child! How do they decide which images of themselves and others are ok to post online? Who can see the content they post online? How can images and statements posted online today effect them later? Even if something is deleted online, it never really goes away. Do not give out personal information online. Create a positive digital footprint!

9 ADDITIONAL TIPS & SUGGESTIONS Establish clear expectations What websites and apps are ok to use and which are not? Who are they allowed to contact and who are they not allowed to contact online? When are they allowed to use their device?

10 CHECKING THE IPAD'S HISTORY Open Safari Select the "open book" icon in the top left corner of the screen. Can scroll through all websites the iPad has visited There is an option to clear the history, so keep in mind if nothing appears when checking the history, it has probably been cleared.
