High School Is Different! 4 Year High School Process, no longer just about “Passing your grade” The College Courses (can start in grade 11 if you do well in grades 9 & 10)– to be eligible in high school, you must maintain 3.0 GPA (“B” average and above) Attend school every day that you can! Do what you already know is right! There is no guarantee that a College or University will accept you later…demonstrate your BEST work starting…NOW! ACT like school matters and it will help you achieve your goals!

GPA made simple GPA is calculated from the Average of your Final grades after they have been converted into the GPA Quality Point Scale. Each point matters. A+ (96 and above)= 4.0 B (88)= 3.0 C (80)= 2.0 D (72)= 1.0 Failing (69-0) = 0.0 (…please don’t choose this) You may have heard about the State of NC changing the grading scale. Don’t worry about this, as it will still be just as tough to get the A, or B, etc. High School is going to be more difficult than middle school, but you are transitioning into the adult world, and if you stay focused and work hard, you will succeed!

How do I graduate? Pass your classes! (9 th grade most common courses underlined) Students take 4 courses per Term, total of 8 courses per year English 1, 2,3, & 4 Math 1, 2, 3, & Adv Functions Earth/Env Science, Biology, Physical Sci or Chem World History, Civics/Econ, American History 1, & American History 2 Req Health & PE 12 (or more) other courses (including Career Cluster or course Concentration), & Capstone (Senior) Project

Common Questions I want to attend college after high school. What classes do I need to take in high school to meet University of NC system requirements? Students planning to attend a four year college need to earn two credits of the same world language (ex. Spanish I & Spanish II). Most students take world language classes in 11 th or 12 th grade. In addition, students must also complete all graduation requirements and earn grades that would qualify them for admission. (For example: UNC system schools require a minimum 2.5 GPA to even be considered. High SAT or ACT scores are also required –discussion for grade 10) Students should check the college websites or for more specific high school requirements that may apply to the schools they are considering. There is no need for most students to try to fit everything into the early years of high school. Take a balanced approach!

Common Questions In order for me to be promoted next school year how many classes do I need to pass? Seniors always answer this question like this….”Just Pass Everything!” What they mean is just be in school, do your work, try, ask for help from the teacher when you don’t get it, and just do what is right…and you will never have to worry about promoting to the next grade!

Common Questions In order to be promoted from the 9 th grade into the 10 th, students must successfully complete 5 of their 8 classes. Students who pass only 4 classes will remain in the 9 th grade and will have to pass every class they take for the remainder of their high school career in order to graduate on time with the required 28 credits.

Common Questions High school website is important. Make sure you check the school website frequently. At the RMHS website, you can find information on how to your teachers, find out about student opportunities & events, learn about scholarships, etc. Many of your questions can be answered by looking through the website.

MONDAY FEBRUARY 9 th 5:30-7:30 Arts- We have Visual Art, Pottery, Strings, Band, Vocal Music, Theater Arts If you play a string instrument or want to learn…Sign up for the “Strings” course. Violin, viola, cello, bass…you can learn at RMHS! We have a great chorus program! Choose Vocal Music if you love to sing, or write music, or if you want to learn! Our Band program is truly “world class”! Our students create all kinds of awesome Visual Art! …Painting, drawing, photography, printing, 3D art, and pottery! Theater Arts has a state of the art “Black Box” and dynamic programs!

MONDAY FEBRUARY 9 th 5:30-7:30 Our International Baccalaureatte (IB) Program and our AP courses are going strong – they start in Grade 11. Students interested in IB will need to sign up for the required courses in grade 9 …and later grade 10. Be sure to try you best in your core classes in grades 9 & 10 to access these opportunities…(make your best grades!)

Great Opportunities! Clubs How do I get involved in school clubs and organizations? What are some clubs? High schools have different clubs and organizations. At RMHS, clubs will generally start meeting in September. Announcements about events on campus are published daily and will play on the TV’s around the school. Interested students need to make arrangements to stay after school for the meetings. Some clubs will have dues or other requirements. Different options include: Key Club, First Priority, Art Club, the International Club, Science Club, Quiz Bowl, SRA (Student Government), Sierra Club, …etc…about every area of learning that you have interest in will have a club opportunity associated with it.
