Genre Action Romance Thriller Horror Adventure Sci-fi Crime Comedy Animated Historical Biography

Actors & Stars We use the term star to describe an actor or actress who is very famous and gets paid large amounts of money to act in movies or television shows. We use the term actress for women We use the term actor for men.

The Director The director is the artistic manager of a film. He is considered the leader of a film and is responsible for how a film looks. The director chooses the different shots and angles and works with the actors and actresses on their performances as well. Although a film is a collaborative effort, the final outcome rests on the shoulders of the director.

Producer The producer is the person who finds financing and supervises the making of a film. Films are very expensive, and one of the producers jobs is to balance the films budget. This can be very difficult to do.

Editor A film editor is a mechanic who removes the unneeded and fits pieces of film together to make a finished movie. He is a collaborator who works with cinematographers and sound editors to bring sight and sound together. And he is an artist who captures a directors vision and tells a compelling story.

Cinematogrpaher Some dictionaries will say it's the person who operates the camera, but it's really the person responsible for determining how a shot will be captured onto film. S/he works with the director about (among other things) what film stock to use, what lens to use, how to frame the shot, what moves (pans, zooms, etc.) might be needed during a shot, and how to set up the lights. A cinematographer is often called a DP, for director of photography.

Setting & Background Where & When does the movie take place? Space? Korea? 1950? 2514?

Plot & Story What a movie is about or what happens in a movie is the plot or story. We use to words plot and story when talking about books, television shows, and plays, too!

Climax We use the term climax to describe how a movie ends. The exciting or suspenseful end to a movie is the movies climax.

Reviews A movie critic is a person who write a review about a movie in a newspaper, magazine, or internet site. Sometimes bad reviews affect how much money a movie makes at the box office. Sometimes movies that get good reviews do poorly at the box office. Example: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story Sometimes movies that get bad reviews do really well at the box office. Example: Independence Day
