What Are Vitamins, Why? What Do They Do, and Vitamins are natural substances found in plants and animals and known as Essential nutrients for human beings. The body uses these substances to stay healthy and support its many functions.. There are 13 vitamins your body needs. They are vitamins A, C, D, E, K and the B vitamins What Do They Do, and Your body needs them to work properly, so you grow and develop just like you should. When it comes to vitamins, each one has a special role to play. Why? It’s a safe method of optimizing your dietary sources of nutrients.

FAT or Water Soluble Vitamins Vitamins are grouped into 2 categories Fat Soluble Vitamins When you eat foods that contain fat-soluble vitamins, the vitamins are stored in the fat tissues in your body and in your liver. They wait around in your body fat until your body needs them. Fat-soluble vitamins are happy to stay stored in your body for awhile — some stay for a few days, some for up to 6 months! Then, when it's time for them to be used, special carriers in your body take them to where they're needed. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble 2. Water Soluble Vitamins When you eat foods that have water-soluble vitamins, the vitamins don't get stored as much in your body. Instead, they travel through your bloodstream. Whatever your body doesn't use comes out when you urinate. So these kinds of vitamins need to be replaced often because they don't stick around! Vitamin C and the big group of B vitamins — B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), niacin, B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, B12 (cobalamine), biotin, and pantothenic acid are water-soluble.

Vitamin A Vitamin A is found in: Solubility: Fat Vitamin A works together with vitamins D, B, E, zinc, phosphorus and calcium. It also acts as an antioxidant, which may help protect against cancer and other diseases. Healthy formation of bones, teeth, skin; maintenance of outer layer of many tissues and organs; promotes growth and vitality; essential in pregnancy and lactation; necessary for night vision; good for growth and repair of body tissues; good for health of hair Deficiency Disease: Night-blindness and Keratomalacia, Keratinisation of the nasal and respiratory passage epithelium Deficiency Symptoms: Defective Teeth and Gums, Allergies, Dry Hair, Retarded Growth, Susceptibility to Infections, Night Blindness, Eye Irritations, Sinus Trouble, Dry Skin, Loss of Smell. Deficiency Occurs in: People who limit their consumption of liver, dairy foods, and beta-carotene-containing vegetables Extremely low birth weight babies Solubility: Fat Vitamin A is found in: Dark green & yellow fruit and vegetables Dairy produces Liver Egg

Vitamin C Solubility: Water Vitamin C is found in: Citrus Fruits Vitamin C is an antioxidant vitamin that protects cells from oxidative damage. Vitamin C is necessary for the production of collagen (for wound healing), hormones and neurotransmitters; it may have a role in fighting infection. Benefits Helps heal wounds, scar tissue and fractures, Essential for healthy bones, teeth and gums, Builds resistance to infection, Prevents scurvy, Gives strength to blood vessels, Aids in absorption of iron, Is essential for the synthesis of collagen. Solubility: Water Deficiency Disease: Scurvy Deficiency Symptoms: Prolonged healing of wounds, Easy bruising, Frequent infections, Prolonged colds, Scurvy: weak muscles, fatigue, loss of teeth, bleeding gums, depression, bleeding beneath the skin, Swollen or painful joints, Nosebleeds, Anemia: tired, paleness Deficiency Occurs in: Smokers Women with Preeclampsia, who have lower blood levels People with kidney failure Vitamin C is found in: Citrus Fruits Tomatoes Melons Berries Green & Red Peppers Broccoli

Vitamin D Vitamin D is found in: Solubility: Fat Vitamin D is necessary for the reproduction of new skin cells. It is one of only three vitamins that are absorbed by the skin (the other two are vitamins A and E). It plays a key role in ensuring the absorption of calcium from the intestines. Functionality Required for bone and teeth formation, Improves absorption Deficiency Disease: Rickets and Osteomalacia Deficiency Symptoms: Symptoms include bone pain and tenderness and Muscle Weakness. In children, Rickets may occur, in which bones lose calcium and become soft and curved. Without proper intake, there is an increased risk of Osteoporosis, Arthritis, and Cancer. Deficiency Occurs in: More common in strict vegetarians Dark-skinned people Alcoholics People with liver or kidney disease People with hyperparathyroidism Also common in men with advanced prostate cancer Solubility: Fat Vitamin D is found in: Fatty fish milk fortified with vitamin D egg yolks

Vitamin E Solubility: Fat Vitamin E is an antioxidant vitamin that prevents cell damage that may lead to cancer. By inhibiting the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, vitamin E may reduce the risk of heart disease. It belongs to the family of drugs called tocopherols. Functionality: Retards cellular aging because of oxygen, Alleviates fatigue by supplying oxygen, Prevents and dissolves blood clots, Helps in preventing sterility, Aids in bringing nourishment to cells Deficiency Disease: Deficiency is very rare; mild hemolytic anemia in newborn infants Deficiency Symptoms: Symptoms include in Infants irritability, Fluid Retention and Anemia. Adult symptoms may include Lethargy, Loss of balance and Anemia. There may be increased risk of Heart Disease, Cancer, and Premature Aging with marginal deficiencies. Deficiency Occurs in: People with a genetic defect in a vitamin E transfer protein called thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) Women with Preeclampsia Very old people with type 2 diabetes Solubility: Fat Vitamin E is found in: Vegetable oil wheat germ nuts dark green vegetables whole grains beans

Vitamin K Vitamin K is found in: Solubility: Fat Vitamin K is necessary for proper bone growth and blood coagulation. It accomplishes this by helping the body transport calcium. Vitamin K is known as the clotting vitamin, because without it blood would not clot. Some studies indicate that it helps in maintaining strong bones in the elderly. Vitamin K plays an important role in the intestines and aids in converting glucose into glycogen for storage in the liver, promoting healthy liver function. Deficiency Disease: Bleeding Diathesis, Delayed clotting & Hemorrhaging, Cholestatic Constipation, Patients may show signs of bruising easily and have nosebleeds. Deficiency Symptoms: Symptoms include prolonged clotting time, easy bleeding, and bruising. This deficiency is rare in adults and normally limited to those with liver or food absorption disorders. However, it may occur in premature babies. Deficiency Occurs in: People with certain Malabsorption diseases Hospitalized patients who had poor food intake and were receiving antibiotics Sometimes develop in breast-fed infants Solubility: Fat Vitamin K is found in: leafy green vegetables Beef liver dairy products, like milk and cheese broccoli soybean oil

Vitamin B Solubility: Water   There's more than one B vitamin. Here's the list: B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin, folic acid, biotin, and pantothenic acid. The B vitamins are important in metabolic (say: meh-tuh-bah-lik) activity — this means that they help make energy and set it free when your body needs it. So the next time you're running to third base, thank those B vitamins. This group of vitamins is also involved in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout your body. Every part of your body needs oxygen to work properly, so these B vitamins have a really important job. Vitamin B12 is important for metabolism. Metabolism within the body includes the processes of energy generation and use; including nutrition, digestion, absorption, elimination, respiration, circulation, and temperature regulation. Vitamin B6 helps the immune system produce antibodies. Antibodies are needed to fight many diseases. Vitamin B6 helps maintain normal nerve function and form red blood cells. The body uses it to help break down proteins. The more protein you eat, the more vitamin B6 you need. Thiamine (B1) helps the body cells change carbohydrates into energy. It is also essential for heart function and healthy nerve cells. Riboflavin (B2) works with the other B vitamins. It is important for body growth and the production of red blood cells. Niacin is a B vitamin that helps maintain healthy skin and nerves. It is also has cholesterol-lowering effects. Biotin is essential for the metabolism of proteins and carbohydrates, and in the production of hormones and cholesterol. Folate works with vitamin B12 to help form red blood cells. It is necessary for the production of DNA, which controls tissue growth and cell function. Any woman who is pregnant should be sure to get enough folate. Low levels of folate are linked to birth defects such as spina bifida. Many foods are now fortified with folic acid. Pantothenic acid is essential for the metabolism of food. It is also plays a role in the production of hormones and cholesterol. Solubility: Water

Pills /Capsules ~ Injections ~ Liquid Taking Vitamins Pills /Capsules ~ Injections ~ Liquid What’s The Best Way? Most vitamins are taken in pill form, however for those who find it difficult to swallow pills, other methods can be used to get your vitamins in.  Many vitamin supplements are available in liquid and injection forms which may be more user friendly. Which is best for you? Most vitamin injections are prescribed. If you believe this method might be right for you, consult your doctor.

Pills Binders and Fillers Fillers are necessary for the manufacturing process, but do nothing more for the pill itself than take up volume. The pill must be large enough for human fingers to readily handle. Even some small pills are quite a bit larger than the active ingredients they contain. Some common fillers are lactose (milk sugar), microcrystalline cellulose, corn starch, sugars (including sucrose, mannitol, sorbitol, fructose, and dextrose), whey and yeast. Binders are used to make the components stick together when the ingredients are compressed to make the pill. Some common binders are povidone, xanthan gum and Carbopol (an acrylic resin). Some fillers may also act as binding agents and are referred to as filler/binders.

Liquid Vitamins vs. Pills Liquid supplements are delivered in an isotonic solution. This means that the body has less work to do to in obtaining maximum absorption. The isotonic state of the suspension allows nutrients to pass directly into the small intestine and be rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream. With liquid supplements, little nutritive value is lost, making the absorption of nutrients highly efficient while delivering maximum results.
