Introduction to the Research Essay
Presentation transcript:

Why research? to learn the research process to share information to practice finding sources, note taking, and writing expository texts

Why biographies? Two Reasons: 1.Biographies allow you to choose someone in an area that interests you. 2.Biographies also allow me to teach everyone the same research process steps.

Is this a group project? Kind of… Let me explain… Group work: –Research –Bibliography Individual work –Note taking –writing paper Groups of 3 are preferable, but pairs will be accepted. Remember to choose wisely!!

Who should I choose in my group? You and your group will research the SAME person, but you will take notes and write your paper on your own! Ask yourself: –Are these people going to help or hinder your progress?

Who should I research? Choose someone you/your group genuinely finds interesting. Don't choose someone just because there is a lot if information about him or her.

Where will I find information? Library –Autobiography –Biography –Nonfiction Reference Room –Encyclopedia –Biographies Today Series Computer Lab –Internet Articles –Databases World Book Online EBSCO

How much information do I need to find? You will need to have 3 sources of information. Books Magazine articles Databases Internet sites

Research sounds difficult. Is it? The final product is nothing more than a 5 paragraph expository essay. It is the process of gathering information, and citing your sources that is new and can be confusing, especially if you get behind or are unorganized.

How can I make the research process easier? Choose someone that interests you. You will be spending a lot of time with this person. Bring all your research materials to class with you everyday- your group is also depending on you. Keep up! The further behind you get, the harder it will be.

Will I have class time to work? YES! This is an in-class project. You will do most of the work in class. That is not to say that you won't have a homework assignment or two throughout the process. I do NOT want you to: – research at home –type at home

Will I be able to use the school computers? Yes, BUT… computer time depends on the availability of the computer labs. If you need more than what time is allowed during the school day, you will need to make special arrangements with Miss Rosenbaum to use a school computer. (i.e. signing planner for study hall, etc.)

How will I be graded? 100 points for the PROCESS 50 points for the FINAL PAPER + 50 points for the PRESENTATION 200 TOTAL POINTS

Breakdown of Process Points 15 pts. sources 25 pts. notes 10 pts. thesis statement 20 pts. outline 30 pts. rough draft 100 pts.

When is it due? You will have small parts due at different times during the process. The final paper is due: Tuesday, February 5, 2013 Presentations will take place during the following week. ** Dates might change according to school schedule**
