The Stage Is Set For War Youngmin, Lisa 9E

Factors leading Europe to War Imperialism- A policy in which strong nation seeks to dominate other countries Nationalism- devotion to ones nation –MY COUNTRY IS THE BEST BECAUSE I WAS BORN THERE Militarism- A policy of glorifying military power.

Imperialism Nationalism Militarism

Factor One- Imperialism As European countries started to carve Africa and Asia, competition between European countries for more colonies played a role in propelling Europe into war. RIVALRY

Factor Two- Nationalism European countries compete to be considered as one of the Great Powers. Compete to be better than neighboring countries. Great Britain vs. Germany – Industrial dominance NATIONALISM LED TO SEVERE RIVALRY

Factor Three- Militarism Nationalism led to competition for better military To be truly great, must have powerful military Create tension between countries

Triple Alliance Rivalries grew in Europe so the solution was forming alliances between European countries Otto Von Bismarck- Chancellor of Germany – Thought France was threat to peace – Try to isolate France Robbing France of its allies Triple Alliance- Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy

Triple Entente Bismarck also make a treaty with Russia But Kaiser Wilhelm leader of Germany forces Bismarck to resign Kaiser brakes treaty with Russia – Russia gets mad- make alliance with France At the same time Germany is jealous of Great Britains navy – Germany try to challenge Great Britain Great Britain feels threatened so join France and Russia, forming Triple Entente

Ottoman Empire Decline People wanted to break away from Ottoman Empire Some people did form their own nation Strong nationalism- wanting to expand boarders and become more powerful

Serbia Vs. Austria Serbia- want to absorb all the slavs in the Balkans – Russia (slavic population) supported Serbia However Austria- threatened by serbias growth Solution: Austria, 1908 Annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina (Slavic Regions) Serbia leaders who wanted to control them= outraged – possibility of war Russia full support to Serbia which was little Germany full support to Austria Serbia had to back down

Shot rings through Europe June 28th 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie visit Sarajevo – Was assassinated by 19 yrs old Serbian Black Hand Assassinator was Serbian- Austria punish Serbia Once again Germany gives full support to Austria, letting them do anything to Serbian Austria presents ultimatum to Serbia Serbia accept few but want to negotiate for other Austria X negotiate WAR BEGINS
