Hegemonic Masculinity.

This stereotypical influence on sport and physical activity has resulted in the construction of hegemonic masculinity. These are the structures and relationships in society that appear to be based on male dominance and female oppression (Amezdroz et al, 2010, p.487)

This means that within Australian society Sport and physical activity play key roles in developing masculinity and male dominance. (Amezdroz et al, 2010, p.488) Structures still remain where sport and physical activity are viewed as a male domain and the primary sight for the construction of masculinity (Amezdroz et al, 2010, p.488). The playing fields, change rooms, and social places for after sport are all reinforce this masculinity and act as a ‘rite of passage’ into adulthood (Amezdroz et al, 2010, p.488).

Masculinity Hegemonic These structures remain shaped by early history in which sport and physical activity were viewed as mainly a male domain (pg. 487) Organised team sport has long been considered a primary sight for the construction of masculinity (2010, p.488).

In this environment femininity is viewed as Masculinity Hegemonic In this environment femininity is viewed as having a lack of skill (Amezdroz et al, 2010, p.488) the inability to play games valued by males (Amezdroz et al, 2010, p.488) These attitudes are often expressed in abuse (Amezdroz et al, 2010, p.488) ‘playing like a girl’ This assumes females are inferior to males in sport (Amezdroz et al, 2010, p.488).
