SOCIALISATION

Socialisation Part of every society Different in each society Each has own values, attitudes and beliefs

Learning to behave as a boy or girl is an essential part of socialisation in any society. The ways in which males and females are expected to behave are determined very much by cultural values, attitudes and beliefs (Discuss Muslims) Society expects males to behave in ways that are quite different from the ways in which females are expected to behave.

Examples in Australia Boys tend to be taught in a quite explicit way that sporting skill is an integral part of masculinity Basic skills of ball throwing, catching, kicking and batting are practised by young boys and observed by watchful and proud parents. Girls, too, are introduced to these skills. But often the expectation is that they will have little need for them and little chance of success in developing and using them

SOCIALISATION Part of every society, but the process is different in each society because each has its own values, attitudes and beliefs. Society expects males to behave in ways that are quite different from the ways in which females are expected to behave. 6 SOCIALISATION “the process by which individuals learn to modify their behaviour to conform to what is considered ‘acceptable’ in their society. It includes learning the cultural attitudes, values and roles of society” (Amezdroz et al, 2004). (pg 483)
