Fill in your notes with the words that are underlined. The black cat was napping in the sun. An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. Adjectives can tell you what kind of noun: look, smell, taste, sound, or feel.

Adjectives can describe how much or how many, as in the words some, few, all, most, many, a lot, several, couple, and half. I have three books.

Adjectives can also tell which noun you are describing : this, that, these, those **first, second,... Will you hand me that book?

EXAMPLES The blanket felt very soft and fuzzy. I was very tired. A predicate adjective is an adjective that is in the predicate of the sentence and describes the subject of the sentence. A predicate adjective is connected to the subject by a linking verb. EXAMPLES The blanket felt very soft and fuzzy. I was very tired.

Underline the adjectives in each sentence. Let’s Practice Underline the adjectives in each sentence. A silvery moon rode down the western sky. It shed a pale light on the quiet countryside. Long meadows spread out between two hills. The smell of the wild grass was strong. The only sound we heard was the sharp crackle of the fire.

Adjective and Noun Match Up . Adjective and Noun Match Up Give each student an index card or sticky note. Ask half the students to write a noun and the other half to write an adjective. Encourage students to be creative. Remind them that numbers and colors can be adjectives. Then have students walk around the room and pair up nouns and adjectives together. Have them read their words out loud and write a sentence together. The nouns and adjectives might be very silly together! Some students may wish to act out their sentences in front of the class.
