2 You already know about two kinds of words: nouns and verbs. Now we are going to learn about ADJECTIVES.

3 ADJECTIVES are the words we use to describe nouns. (people, places, things)

4 Adjectives are the words scientists use to describe what they see, smell, taste, hear, and feel. Adjectives describe our senses.

5 Adjectives look beautiful. Adjectives smell rotten.

6 Adjectives taste sweet. Adjectives sound noisy.

7 Adjectives feel slippery.

8 Every color word is an adjective. BLUE YELLOW RED ORANGE WHITE PURPLE BLACK PINK GREEN

9 The orange tiger hid by the green leaves.

10 Every size word is an adjective. TEENY MICRO BIG HUMONGOUS HUGE GIGANTIC SMALL LITTLE TINY TREMENDOUS

11 The bug was so tiny we needed a microscope to see it.

12 Every number word is an adjective. FIVE MANY LOTS HUNDRED FEW THIRTEEN COUPLE SOME TEN ONE

13 There were four animals at the children’s zoo.

14 Can you find the adjectives in these sentences? Sara loves her soft, fuzzy blanket. The brown cow ate a large pizza. Let’s tell some scary stories!

15 Sara loves her soft, fuzzy blanket. Soft and fuzzy describe the blanket. Soft and fuzzy are both adjectives. The brown cow ate a large pizza. Brown describes the cow and large describes the pizza. Brown and large are both adjectives. Let’s tell some scary stories! Some and scary describe the stories.

16 Now its your turn. Can you find the adjectives in the following sentences?

17 STOP 1. The little boy ate purple jam. 2. The old lady sat by the fire. 3. I found twenty dollars. 4. A cold wind blew in the door.

18 Adjectives also help you compare two things. Many times you just need to add er or est to an adjective to compare nouns.

19 Batman is strong. Hercules is strong er. Superman is the strong est !

20 My cat is small. Jordan’s cat is small er. Emmaly’s cat is the small est !

21 STOP I have the (big, bigger, biggest) house on our street. Our puppy was the (small, smaller, smallest) dog in the pet show.

22 Now its your turn. Find the adjectives in the following sentences.

23 STOP 5. The smallest birds flew away. 6. The shiny, new, red, Corvette convertible is beautiful. 7. I drank the sticky, yucky, brown medicine the Dr. gave me. YUCK!

24 Remember: Adjectives describe nouns. They describe people. The cute baby.

25 Adjectives describe places. The brown brick school needed paint.

26 Adjectives describe things. The dirty 18 wheel truck had a flat tire.

27 Now its your turn. Find the adjectives in the following sentences.

28 STOP 8. My big family has many pets. 9. We have seven cats, two fish, two dogs and a frog. 10. We have grey, fluffy cats, slippery fish, smelly dogs, and a huge green frog.
