Apuntes de noviembre Los mandatos familiares (Familiar Commands) We use commands to give orders or advice. Here is how affirmative commands for most verbs are formed when the subject is tú.

There are eight verbs that have irregular affirmative commands.

Ejemplos: Prende la computadora y abre el archivo. Turn on the computer and open the file. Guarda el documento antes de apagar la computadora. Save the document before turning off the computer. Haz tu tarea. Do your homework.

The negative tú commands are formed by dropping the final -o of the yo form of the present tense. For -ar verbs, add -es. For -er and -ir verbs, add -as.

Ejemplos: No prendas la computadora. Don’t turn on the computer. No hables así con tu hermanito. Don’t talk like that with your brother. No estaciones el coche aquí. Don’t park the car here.

The following verbs have irregular negative tú command forms.

When using object pronouns, attach them directly to the end of the verb in affirmative commands. If the verb has two syllables or more, add a written accent to maintain the stress on the correct syllable in the verb. ¿Le debo hablar al profesor? Do I have to speak to the teacher? - Sí, háblale. -Yes, speak to him. ¿Quieres saber la verdad? Do you want to know the truth? -Sí, dime la verdad. -Yes, tell me the truth.

With negative commands, object pronouns come in front of the verb and form separate words. ¿Le debo hablar al profesor? Do I have to speak to the teacher? -No, no le hables. -No, don’t speak to him. ¿Quieres saber la verdad? Do you want to know the truth? -No, no me digas la verdad. -No, don’t tell me the truth.
