3 Imperativo Porque hay formal e informal maneras de hablar en español, hay formal e informal maneras de hacer un “command”. Vamos a aprender como hacer un “command” formal hoy. También vamos a hablar del ustedes “command” hoy.

4 Formal Commands Formal commands are often called “usted” commands.
Usted is the formal way of addressing someone, so usted commands are the formal way to command someone. You would use this command when talking to someone you do not know well, people older than you, people you generally respect. (think: anyone you would address with their title. Ex. Mr./Mrs.) Ustedes is the plural way to address a group of people of which you are not a part of.

5 How to use it: Usted All usted commands are the same as the present subjunctive usted form of the verb. -ar verbs will become -e er and -ir will become -a ex. Hable con el presidente ex. Coma las verduras. Escriba el papel. Remember that to form the present subjunctive form of the verb, you start with the yo form of the verb, drop the -o ending and add the new ending, e o a.

6 Irregulares: Usted Since the usted form uses the present subjunctive form of the verb, any verb that is irregular in the present subjunctive will be irregular in the imperative. Dar Dé Saber Sepa Estar Esté Ser Sea Haber Haya Ir Vaya Remember that all verbs that are irregular (stem-changers, spelling differences) in the present indicative form are irregular in the present subjunctive form, therefore irregular in the imperative.

11 Pronoun Placement To use a reflexive pronoun, object pronoun or direct object pronoun in an affirmative command you would attach it to the verb. The command verb will get an accent to show original pronunciation and stress. Déme las galletas. You formal give me the cookies. To use a reflexive pronoun, object pronoun or direct object pronoun in a negative command you would attach it to the verb. No le digan la verdad. You all don’t tell him/her the truth.

12 Negative Formal Commands
To make a negative formal command, you add the negative “no” before the verb. ejemplo: No estén en el gimnasio después de las ocho. No vaya a la playa sin bloqueador solar.
