TOPIC 3 How-to build a successful ‘in school’ Mentoring Program ‘an invitation to connect and inspire transformation’ Just as we are learning to value and conserve the air we breathe, the water we drink, the energy we use, we must learn to value and conserve our capacity for nurture. Otherwise, we will slowly but surely erode the source of our humanity” Elaine Heffner, 1996 Mark Le Messurier, for

What is a mentor?

Someone to; talk to laugh with cry alongside feel cared for help find ways to persist listen to friendship issues build confidence develop self-awareness teach ways make positive changes develop new, organisational systems set up new, refreshing plans/goals A mentor?

“Mentorship in schools is a new and compassionate response to support the increasingly complex needs of students. We’ve had to find a way to make this work even though it is not the way we have done things in the past. This sort of program is here to stay. It is a forerunner to proposals that will eventually become mandatory in schools.” Steve Hicks, Principal - Birdwood High School The mentoring story The mentoring story; … change is on the wind

The story The story; “ creative solutions make it work…”

The story The story; “for those who rely on a higher level of guidance …”

The story The story; “it’s an ‘encouragement’ program…”

The story The story; “the recipe…”

Discussion Discussion: Reflect on your past - Who helped you find your compass? How old were you? What did they say? What did they do? How did they gently build your belief? How did they plant optimistic seeds? Who was it?

‘Did you recall an adult who had a positive impact on you?’ ‘Were they actually a mentor?’

It’s all about relationship

And, it’s the same for teachers. Students quickly determine a teacher’s emotional character. Then, make a decision whether they will trust and enjoy, or challenge and react; Is my teacher moody? Does my teacher shout? Does my teacher get annoyed too easily, too often? Does my teacher admit when they have made a mistake? Is my teacher safe? Is my teacher one way to my parent and another way to me? Is my teacher fair? Does my teacher like me?

Discussion Discussion : a relationship building exercise
