The “BE” Verb
Be is a verb? It certainly is, but… –It doesn’t show action like most verbs –It tells what someone or something is or like
Example time Marvin was being silly. NOTE: with this example we are using two verbs, was and being. Normally when we write or say this, we get rid of being. Marvin was silly
Our Present Tense “Be” Verbs am are is EXAMPLES –I am running. –We are laughing. –Freddy Joe is smiling.
Our Past Tense “Be” Verbs was were EXAMPLES –She was crying. –John and Sara were hopping.
Practice Decide what form of the “BE” verb should fit in the blanks. Then decide if the sentence is in past or present tense. am, was, is, are,were I ________ running on the track. Game Time The class will be divided into two teams. For each problem, I will announce a “be” verb. Everyone will have 20 seconds to write a complete sentence using the “be” verb. correctly. Then I will call on one person from a team to show me their sentence. If their sentence is correct and they know the tense, they get a point. If incorrect, the other team can steal the point by showing me a correct sentence.
