1 Regular Past Tense Verbs
What is past tense? Present tense explains what we are doing right now. Past tense explains something that already happened. Yesterday Today Tomorrow PAST PRESENT FUTURE

2 Regular Past Tense When we want to explain what we did in the past we use the ending “ed” on our action verb. Some examples: Present Tense: We learn how to read Past Tense: Last week we learned how to read. Present Tense: I play the guitar. Past Tense: Yesterday I played the guitar.

3 Clue Words Some words that tell us something happened in the past:
Yesterday Last night Last week Last month Last year Already Earlier

4 Regular Past Tense We play outside at recess. (Present Tense)
Past Present Future Yesterday, we played outside at recess. (Past Tense) Past Present Future

I love tacos. We are using our new pencils. It rained three inches last night. I jumped over a puddle yesterday. Last year I attended Arndt.

7 Regular Past Tense Not all words use “ed” to make them past tense.
We know we can change a verb into the past tense by adding “ed.” (play – played, work – worked, kick – kicked) BUT, If the verb ends with the letter e, only add d to make the sentence past tense.

8 Regular Past Tense Some verbs that end in e: move – moved chase – chased bounce – bounced love – loved dance – danced

9 Tom played on his school soccer team. He loved to kick the ball
Tom played on his school soccer team. He loved to kick the ball. His team always worked on their passing skills. Tom passed the ball to his friend Jose. Jose lived on the same street as Tom. Jose and Tom liked to practice together. They even practiced on weekends. They learned new skills by working together. They worked hard during practice so they could play better. They enjoyed learning new soccer skills. Tom and Jose wanted to be the most skilled players on the team.

We pronounce / t / after voiceless sounds: / p /, / k /, / s /, / f / and voiceless / th / sound Examples: stop = stopped look = looked miss = missed laugh = laughed wash = washed

13 Pronouncing Regular Past Tense Verbs
• We pronounce / d / after voiced sounds: / b / , / g /, / v /, / z/, / m/, /n /, / l /, / r / , voiced / th / sound and all vowels. Examples grab = grabbed live = lived buzz = buzzed hum = hummed open = opened call = called stay = stayed

• We pronounce / id / after / d / and / t / sounds. Examples: divide = divided want = wanted decide = decided visit = visited
