On- Demand Writing September 17 – 28, 2007

To answer your question! YES, you need to take notes. You will see this stuff again.

The Goal of On Demand Writing is to… Write in the correct mode (form) as is often demanded in real-life situations. Communicate with an audience. Explain the purpose for writing.

Each year all the seniors in the state of Kentucky are given an ON-DEMAND assessment. This test consists of 2 writing prompts and everything you need to proficiently address the subject is found in the PROMPT! OK, so what do we do first???

SALE – The Modes Speech Article Letter Editorial

What’s next?

You Map it out!

OK, So How Do I Get Started?

Let’s Practice… Write this on your paper. Situation: It is well known that smoking is harmful. Because of this, politicians in our country are debating the possibility of outlawing the growing of tobacco. Think of how this would affect your community. Writing task: You are to write a news article for the local newspaper to support or oppose the practice of growing tobacco in Kentucky.

NOW…

To square the mode you simply draw a square around the mode or form of writing called for in the prompt. You are to write a news article for the local newspaper to support or oppose the practice of growing tobacco in Kentucky.

Now circle the intended audience of the writing… You are to write a news article for the local newspaper to support or oppose the practice of growing tobacco in Kentucky.

OK, so I know what kind of writing I’m supposed to do, I know to whom I am writing, and I know what I’m supposed to write about. NOW WHAT?

BRAINSTORM Pick a side, then jot down points. Support growing tobacco in KY… Oppose growing tobacco in KY…

For each point you come up with, provide three reasons to illustrate your idea. Tobacco is bad for athletes 2. Smokers run slower and can’t run as far. 1.Smoking wrecks your lungs and reduces the oxygen for your muscles needed for performance. 3. Smoking causes shortness of breath, forget running up stairs or that bank shot

Tobacco is bad for your appearance. 1.Tobacco smoke can make hair and clothes stink. 2. Tobacco stains teeth and causes bad breath. 3. Short-term use of spit tobacco can cause cracked lips, white spots, sores, and bleeding in the mouth. Surgery to remove oral cancers caused by tobacco use can lead to serious changes in the face.

TOBACCO KILLS 1. It causes lung disease. 2. Heart disease 3. Cancer 4. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in Children.

The next step – yes I’m going to say it.

Do a sample outline just for practice on your paper now.

Remember without support, your ideas will collapse!

If you write one what, then you must give 2 whys, hows or whens. Tobacco is bad. –Tobacco smoking is dangerous to your lungs. –Tobacco causes cancer. THEN, you explain WHY…..

Make sure each paragraph addresses your purpose. 1 st point – relates to purpose 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th points relate to main purpose Main Purpose

Other Prompts! Choose 1 to write about. Your school district is considering a rule that students may not carry backpacks to school. Do you agree or disagree? Write a letter to the school board to persuade them to support your opinion.  Eating the proper foods is very important in order to stay healthy. Often, young people like to eat junk foods and they do not eat healthy fruits and vegetables. Write a speech to the 9 th grade class to persuade them that a balanced diet is important in staying healthy.

NOW, step by step, go through the process!
