Junior English Ms. Gersten Writing Lesson #17 How to Research

What is Research? Research is all about addressing an issue or asking and answering a question or solving a problem

How to Research Identify an issue, question, or problem You are addressing a controversial issue Have an opinion on your topic You are not just explaining the issue You are picking a side and showing that side to be correct Find out what's already known about it READ different opinions on the subject Find out what experts are saying

How to Find Articles READ, READ, READ! Find articles that support your point of view You do not need to print articles that only say what you already know Look for in-depth information Look for new information if all of your articles say almost the same thing, they are not useful Articles need to be long enough to have some substance if your article is less than a page, it is too short!

How to Research Once you find an article you think you can use: Take notes!!! Print your article Highlight information and quotes that support your opinion Make comments on a Word document write the info or quotes make sure to include the article, who said it, and page number Organize your ideas Knowing what you have information on will help you write your thesis Look for main topics: these will be the reasons that you cover in your paper
