How Funds Are Raised Major Giving

Major Gifts Major Gift programs are directed toward INDIVIDUAL donors. However, these individual donors may make their gifts from companies they own, foundations they have established or from their own personal resources. What Is a Major Gift?

Major Gifts Major Gifts at LMU are defined as gifts greater than $25, and may take the form of unrestricted or restricted gifts. What Defines a Major Gift at LMU?

Capital Projects such as new residence halls New technology for classrooms Endowed academic chairs Endowed academic scholarships Endowed faculty development funds Many other areas! What Do Major Gifts Fund at LMU? Major Gifts

What is the Process that Leads to Major Gifts? Identification Involvement Interest Information Investment Major Gifts

Cultivating a Donor Means Identifying: Linkage: What are the shared values and connections that we share? Ability: What is the donor’s capacity to give? Interest: How engaged is the potential donor with LMU? Major Gifts

Potential donors have the linkage, interest and ability to give to LMU. Identify who should be the right person to make the call/contact/visit. Then choreograph the call. How are Potential Donors Identified?

Major Gifts Wealth screening programs Alumni and friends Lincoln friends Board of Trustees Advisory boards Faculty and staff How Is Information Gathered?

Major Gifts By uncovering shared values By giving people an opportunity to act on their values by giving to LMU Ask yourself: Why do you give to LMU? What is important to you? In What Ways is Interest Cultivated?

Major Gifts Campus events like dinner theater Arts programs Athletic events Are they a good candidate for an advisory board? Who can you encourage to get involved? How Do Potential Donors Get Involved?

How Do We Maintain Positive Relationships? The Solicitor’s Preparation The Donor’s Relationship The Call The Vision The Ask The Follow Up The Thank You A long-standing, carefully nurtured relationship with LMU and the people who represent us. Major Gifts

Once their values match ours, the gift will be given. When Is an Investment Made?

Major Gifts PREPARATION PREPARATION PREPARATION! Determine the Right Person to Ask at the Right Time Build your case for support Polish your own philanthropy story. Why do you give? It’s all about students, so have a student success story on hand What do we want our product to be? A successful student. What Are the Elements of a Successful Ask?

Major Gifts What Can a Donor Expect? Throughout the entire process, the donor has the right to be kept informed and involved in regard to the use and benefits of their past gift. It is an aspect of cultivation for future support and it involves LMU’s careful management of the donor’s gift in order to keep the donor’s confidence.
