Renewable energy sources worldwide Renewable energies are the future technologies: It provides a secure and climate-friendly energy supply, create jobs and opportunities for development. 2010 round about 26% of all new power plants were renewables. The renewable energy industry offers more than 2.4 million jobs. Studies show the international network REN21 that renewable energies are developing rapidly and a significant part of global energy supply. Wind and solar energy, hydropower, geothermal and biomass on all continents provide for greater supply security and promoting economic development.

Job Boom European Renewable energy industry A new study by the WWF has revealed that of the 130 million people employed in the European Union altogether, in excess of 3.4 million European jobs are directly related to renewable energy, sustainable transport and energy efficiency related goods and services. Indirect jobs related to the green collar sector are estimated at approximately another 5 million. The leading European countries for wind power are Germany, Spain and Denmark. For solar power jobs, Germany and Spain are the front runners. Germany and Spain have or had generous gross feed in tariff programs that were major contributors to the solar power boom in both countries. European wind industry employment has the potential to reach 330,000 jobs in 2020. Under fairly conservative assumptions, Europe’s solar panel related workforce is expected to expand strongly 1.4 million.

Job Opportunities There are a wide variety of professions available in the renewable energy industry. This fact can make it challenging to find the right professional niche, but it also provides the opportunity for individuals with many different types and degrees of training to get involved with renewable energy. Some jobs - such as those in communications, community outreach, sales/marketing, and business support (e.g., corporate planning and finance, accounting, human resources, law, and information technology) - can be found in almost every renewable energy field. Other jobs are specific to individual renewable energy technologies, as shown in the following discussion of the five main renewable energy power sources: wind, solar, bioenergy, geothermal, and hydropower.

European Employment Observatory A recent DG TREN report looked at the current and potential RES job profile by Member States. In most countries, biomass use has a high relevance for employment. Again, wind technology is an important contributor to employment in Germany, Denmark and Spain and photovoltaics is relevant in Germany. In Germany,the number of renewables jobs jumped from 56,600 in 1998 to almost 370,000 in 2010. Roland Berger business consultants projected that Germany may have 500,000 people employed in renewables by 2020 and 710,000 by 2030. Eastern European countries have generally been slow to embrace RES technologies, especially wind energy, but this is changing since 2008. The growth rate differs between 70 – 150% in the last two years.

Employment The renewable energy sector related markets employ over 910 000 people across the 27 member States of the European Union. The top employer, with over 280 000 jobs is solid biomass – which stands to reason as it is Europe’s leading primary energy producing sector. The wind power and photovoltaic sectors follow with an estimated 243 600 and 121 800 jobs respectively for 2009. These sectors are now considered as the mainstays of certain countries’ economies as they offer high added-value, highly technical jobs, making them kernel to the economic future of Europe. When we compare countries, we are particularly struck by the yawning gap between the top three countries. Germany has almost 2½ times as people in employment in the renewables sectors as France, and 4 times as many as Spain.

The demands on staff and jobs in the renewable energies increase with increasing technical sophistication and internationalization. The ever-increasing international context is also reflected in the requirements of professionals and managers. Teamwork skills in an intercultural environment and willingness to travel and communication skills are the qualifications.

Job market of renewable energies The future belongs to renewable energy - but who knows all about the art? Many companies are urgently looking for skilled workers, the nuclear phase-out will further exacerbate the situation. Therefore, engineers with specialized knowledge, some green safely ignore keywords in job advertisements. Who specializes in renewable energy, currently has more career opportunities than ever. In the future still needed more skilled workers who are familiar with wind energy, solar or geothermal energy, experts say - the planned nuclear phase-out makes it more certain. "The graduates we are practically torn from their hands," says Volker Quaschning, Professor of Renewable Energy Systems in Berlin. "Many even get one directly after the bachelor's offer of employment."

Jobs in Wind Power The wind industry employs both professional and skilled workers in a number of different capacities. New wind projects require people with business, meteorological, and engineering experience to plan and build projects. Meteorologists help engineers identify appropriate sites with suitable wind conditions. Engineers then design the wind plant, working with the utility companies and communities. Construction workers are needed to build the wind plant. And mechanical and electrical technicians, called "windsmiths," are required to operate and maintain the wind turbines.

Jobs in the wind industry In the wind industry, especially engineering graduates have good chances of a quick career in companies in the industry. Engineers are used primarily in the areas of mechanical engineering and energy technology and the construction of wind turbines, the development and optimization. Jobs in Solar Power Growth of the solar power industry creates high-wage, skilled jobs throughout the country for individuals with many different types of training. Individuals employed in solar sector generally have professional degrees in electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineering; materials science, and/or physics. The PV and solar hot water industries currently employ the majority of these workers, including electricians, engineers, technicians, and technical managers. As utility-scale CSP technologies become commercially viable, the CSP industry will eventually require an increasing number of these workers, as well as engineers and construction workers to design and build power plants.

Jobs in the solar industry For 20 percent growth in the solar industry needs a lot of manpower. If the growth scenarios come true, the industry could employ up to 2020 more than 100,000 people. Jobs in Bioenergy Engineers and construction workers are needed to design and build bioenergy plants, while electrical/electronic and mechanical technicians, engineers (mechanical, electrical, and chemical), mechanics, and equipment operators are needed to run and maintain these plants. Some may even require individuals cross-trained in areas such as engineering and biology, or chemistry and agriculture. Jobs in bioenergy today cut across a wide spectrum of specialties and skills. And if R&D (Research & Diagnostics Systems) and industrial efforts succeed in making bioenergy more commercially profitable, we may see a dramatic increase in the number of bioenergy-related jobs.

Jobs in Geothermal Energy The geothermal industry employs both skilled workers and those with professional degrees. Developing hot water reservoirs requires geologists, geochemists, geophysicists, hydrologists, reservoir engineers, mud loggers, hydraulic engineers, and drillers to locate, assess, and access the reservoirs. Geothermal direct-use technologies create jobs for heating engineers, and in the building and agricultural industries. For electricity production, engineers (electrical and mechanical) and construction workers - along with electrical technicians, electricians, electrical machinists, welders, riggers, and mechanics - are needed to design and construct power plants. Mechanical engineers, geologists, drilling crews, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning contractors are needed to manufacture and install GHPs.

Jobs in Hydropower As with many of the other renewable energy technologies, the design, construction, and maintenance of hydropower plants requires electrical and mechanical engineers, technicians, and skilled workers. If the hydropower project also involves managing the reservoir and the surrounding land, the developer will also hire recreation planners, resource managers, and educators. In addition, state and federal licensing laws now require current or prospective hydropower plant developers to assess the environmental effects of their operation.
