Sixth Grade Procedures For ALL sixth grade students

What and WHY? You are in a new school with much more freedom, we want to make sure you understand what is allowed and what is not. We want to make sure you are safe. These are policies agreed upon by ALL SIXTH GRADE TEACHERS - all teachers will help to enforce these rules (even teachers you may not know!) IF you find that you violated these rules, there is no need to explain or argue. You may say “Okay” or “I’m sorry”. These are not negotiable.

PHONES Phones are POWERED OFF (not just on silent) once you cross into the “No Phone Zone” in the morning.

PHONES You may keep your phones and headphones with you to keep them safe, but IF we see them, there will be a consequence (referral), even if they are powered off. We suggest you keep it zipped in your pencil pouch and you will have nothing to worry about. Some teachers will have places to store your phone in their classroom if you need a place to keep your phone. If you leave the classroom, you will be asked to leave your phone with the teacher.

PHONES AT LUNCH You may use your phone ONCE YOU ARE IN THE LUNCHROOM. The phone must be powered off again once you are in the “no phone zone” and put away (don’t forget!) You may use your headphones at lunch, but ONE EAR PIECE ONLY (you will need to be able to hear any announcements for safety reasons)

HOODS Hoods are NOT allowed to be worn during the school day. Why? It is a safety issue, we need to be able to see your faces and you need to be able to see what goes on around you. You can still wear hoodies BUT the hood MUST REMAIN DOWN AT ALL TIMES. If we ask you to remove your hood, you are in violation of the rules and may receive a referral.

FOLDERS Take your folder to EVERY class (except gym and lunch:) Including Dragon Time ALL unfinished work goes IN YOUR FOLDER ALL work that needs to be turned in goes IN YOUR FOLDER SOME teachers may ask you to put that day’s graded work in your folder to take home. GRADED WORK SHOULD BE TAKEN OUT EACH NIGHT! IF you do not have your folder, it will show on your CREEK grade “Everyone is Responsible” Your teacher may ask you to stay after the bell to discuss your missing folders. Your teacher MAY have small rewards for remembering sometimes (Never ask! Just be thankful if it happens!)

PASSES You have TEN passes for the marking period (that is one per week!) These passes are for a drink, the bathroom, your locker, etc… IF you do not have your passes (which should always be in your folder), you will not be permitted to go. Passing time is to go to your locker and the restroom. You have 25 minutes a day to take care of your business (it is not for free time)these extra 10 passes are FOR RARE EMERGENCIES. Consider only going to your locker a couple times per day to make sure you have enough time to use the restroom.

PASSING TIME Passing time is to move from class to class, to get items from your locker and to use the restroom and get a drink. You must keep moving… to your destination You will hear two chimes and a bell: CHIME #1: Start Moving to your class CHIME #2: You only have one minute until the tardy bell. You could be very close to your classroom, or all the way in! You may not RUN so plan enough time to get where you are going. We know visiting with friends is important and fun, but this should be done at lunch NOT during passing time. Please walk on the RIGHT side of the hall.

FOOD Water only!!!! Do not bring pop, slurpees, gatorade, etc… in to the sixth grade zone. Your first hour teacher may allow you to have some breakfast items from the cafeteria, make sure you know their policy! Some teachers may allow snacks in class, make sure you know where snacks are allowed. NO open food/ eating in the hall. NO finishing food from either breakfast OR lunch on the way down the hall, put it away or throw it away before leaving the cafeteria.

Fighting From the school handbook: Fighting, assault and physical aggression, including various forms of play fighting, is strictly forbidden. Students who fight will be referred to the office for disciplinary action that may lead to immediate suspension from school and could also lead to possible expulsion. Claiming self-defense will not excuse a student who has engaged in a fight. Therefore, upon investigation, both parties who engage in a fight will be given appropriate consequences as determined by the Administration. Use of non-violent conflict resolution strategies will always be the expected method of avoiding a fight. What are some options if you find yourself in the middle of an argument ?

Other Policies CLEAN LANGUAGE ONLY! A curse word or inappropriate references/gestures result in an automatic referral. Your teachers will have their own in-class rules. Please make sure you understand what is and is not allowed in each of your classes. THESE are SIXTH GRADE POLICIES that all teachers will enforce.

Dress Code: Basic Guideline to remember: “Clean & Covered” Shorts/skirts no higher than fingertip level (same with holes in jeans- should not be holes any higher than fingertip level) Shoulders must be covered by at least 3” of clothing/strap Clothing should have school appropriate pictures and words. Hats, bandanas and hoods covering the head are not allowed. See Pg. 46 of the Parent-Student Handbook Decisions regarding appropriate dress will be determined by the Principal
