Tennis Court Oath

Storming the Bastille Louis stations guards around Versailles People fear the army will attack National Assembly Citizens storm the Bastille, an armory and prison, looking for gunpowder Bastille Day –July 14, 1789

A Great Fear Sweeps France Rumors stir people into a panic Peasants arm themselves and attack nobles’ manors Parisian women march on Versailles demanding help with bread crisis Louis & Marie forced to return to Paris

National Assembly Reforms France Adopt the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen” –Reflects American Declaration of Independence –Men are free and equal –Guarantees: 1.Equal justice 2.Freedom of Speech 3.Freedom of Religion • Slogan is “Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity” Doesn’t apply to women

Government Controls the Church National Assembly seizes Church lands Priests will be elected and paid as government officials - Good Need the Church’s money to pay off debts - Bad Priests become politicians; National Assembly loses peasant support

Finally…A New Constitution A Limited Monarchy –In September 1791, Assembly finishes new constitution –Legislative Assembly: new body created to pass laws –King still has executive power to enforce laws October 1791: Louie attempts to flee France

War Breaks Out Problems with Other Countries –Austrians and Prussians want Louis in charge of France; France declares war France at War –Parisian mob jails royal family, kills guards –Mob breaks into prisons, killing over 1,000, including many who support king

Divisions Develop • Factions Split France –Major problems, including debt, food shortages remain –Assembly split into Radicals, Moderates, Conservatives (Left, Middle, Right) –Émigrés: nobles who flee country, want Old Regime back in power –Sans-culottes: lower class who want more change from the Revolution
