Welcome to English Language Arts Mrs. Biblow & Mrs. Schouten

Reading As a class, we will read a variety of genres, including short stories, poetry and novels. Student also engage in “Reading Zone” (independent reading), where they choose “just right” books for themselves. Students are required to have a book in class every day, as well as one “in waiting”. Students will be expected to write and speak about their reading zone books. Reading at home: 20 minutes daily, with occasional home assignments Teachers and parents as partners to monitor students

Grammar and Vocabulary Writing Writing is done mostly in school Reinforcement that writing is a process Various writing products: paragraphs, essays, poetry, creative writing, writing for information Grammar and Vocabulary Tied in with classroom literature Reinforcement through writing Studied in context

Grading Policy Homework 70% Assessments (tests, quizzes, writing, projects) 30% Homework, Classwork and Participation Homework Missed homework – partial credit if it is not reviewed in class on the day it is due Absences - call a homework buddy if possible when absent; check our websites; call guidance counselor to collect work if absence is 3 or more days Websites - http://www.commackschools.org/ABiblow.aspx and https://www.commackschools.org/ASchouten.aspx

Organization Binder – am and pm binders OR small individual binders are required Homework folder (or folders) – recommended; unless students need to study for a test/quiz or organize their binders, these should stay at school Agenda use is required Supplies – some will need to be replenished throughout the year (paper, pencils, etc.)
