Building a city on waste heat – a technological perspective Bundling the energy forms Marko Riipinen HELEN, Finland 20.6.2019

Interactive energy community In modern city energy infrastructure connects buildings to each other. Energy flows are managed Heating-, Cooling-, and Electricity demands are balanced and optimised by energy operator Customer value creation is key driver for Service provider

Cities are full of energy Available energies can be recycled, stored and reused efficiently and most optimal way Waste heats from properties such as shopping centres, data centres, offices and residential buildings is recovered with district cooling. In the future, utilisation of various heat sources will increase, including waste heat from purified waste water, solar heat and waste heat recovered from properties and data centres. Low temperature thermal energy flows can be circulated at the background of the city

Smart City of Helsinki

Bundling the energy forms It’s not anymore just question about heating, cooling and electricity. The significant increase of solar and wind power in electricity market calls various flexibilities for production and use of energy. Weatherproof production, such as combined heat and power generation, hydropower and nuclear power, is needed for the coldest periods of the year. Demand response and energy storage systems will increase and come more common.

Case Helsinki: Old oil cavern is transformed to thermal energy storage Flexibility with thermal storages Volume: 300000 m3 Case Helsinki: Old oil cavern is transformed to thermal energy storage

The role of customers will increase A climate-neutral future will be achieved through innovative, customer-focused solutions and services. Residents will also become active energy producers when solar and electricity storage solutions and various hybrid heating systems become more common. Energy companies businesses are based on Value creation Sustainability High efficiency Energy recovery Energy as a service
