1 Chapter 15 15.3 Energy Resources

2 Nonrenewable Energy Nonrenewable energy resources include oil, natural gas, coal, and uranium.

3 Nonrenewable Energy These resources exist in limited quantities and cannot be replaced except over the course of millions of years.

4 Renewable Energy Resources
Renewable energy resources include hydroelectric, solar, geothermal, wind, biomass, and nuclear fission.

5 Renewable Energy Resources
These can be replaced within a reasonably short amount of time.

6 Hydroelectric energy is obtained from flowing water.
This is the type of energy that we get our power from.

7 Hydroelectric Energy Dams are used to harness the energy from rivers.
Potential energy builds up behind the dam. When the valves are opened the potential energy becomes mechanical kinetic energy. The mechanical energy turns turbines to produce electrical energy.

8 Solar energy is energy harnessed from the sun.

9 Geothermal energy is thermal energy beneath the Earth’s surface.

10 Other Renewable Resources
Biomass energy is energy stored within living things. Burning wood for heat is an example of biomass energy.

11 Other Renewable Resources
Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by reacting hydrogen with oxygen.

12 Conserving Energy Resources
Energy resources can be conserved by reducing energy needs and by increasing the efficiency of energy use.

13 Conserving Energy Resources
What are some ways that we can conserve energy?
