Participatory Lecture

Participatory lecture Participatory lecture is an organized verbal explanation/presentation of a topic by an expert to a group of people.

Learning objectives of PL To refresh as well as enhance knowledge of a group on a topic familiar for them. To develop knowledge on a relatively new topic To develop awareness on a topic among a group. To thoroughly discuss applied aspects of the topic.

Planning May be -To impart knowledge To change attitude Objective To create awareness or interest Objective Size- Optimum size of the participants may be around 25-30 Level of education and knowledge –Talk must be based on minimum level of formal education and knowledge possessed by the participants Needs and Interests- Talk must be in tune with the felt needs and interest of the participants Audience Content 1.Content should be valid, authentic and applicable in real life situation 2. Based on objective(s), size and nature of audience, availability of time, resource etc.

Principles for organizing content Move from simple to complex Move from known to unknown Move from observation to theory Adopt problem centered sequencing Move from general to specific.

Components of participatory lecture Introduction Body of the talk Summary and conclusion Evaluation

Introduction How to introduce? Interesting questions Teaching aids Brief opening to capture the attention of the audience. About 10% of the total time of the talk utilized for motivating the audience. It must be attractive. How to introduce? Interesting questions Teaching aids Create a situation Relevant success story Use examples Cite a quotation Salient features of the topic in brief without giving details

Body of the talk The subject matter is delivered to the participants in details Three-fourth (75%) of time of the presentation should be utilized for this part of the talk. Important points must be discussed thoroughly and repeatedly Divide the subject matter into meaningful steps in an organized manner.

Body of the talk Use short sentences and simple language Develop supporting information for each main idea Frame different type of questions to learners and to increase their level of participation Prepare, arrange and use a variety of visual aids

Summary and conclusion Around 5% of available time should be utilized for this purpose. If the talk is having several parts, summarize frequently each part Summary should be brief, precise, logical and easy to remember. Conclusion should be brief but comprehensive. Summing up should not be elaborate. The conclusion should not form a small speech by itself.

Evaluation -Around 10% of the time should be utilized for this part. -ask some questions from the audience for recapitulation. -Around 10% of the time should be utilized for this part.

Practice the participatory lecture “ Practice makes a man perfect” “If you fail to practice, you are prepared to fail” -Rehearse your presentation at least four times -Rehearse against the clock Benefit of practice a presentation -Overcoming fear -Timing the presentation Perfecting the body language

Presentation Important points to be considered Establish eye contact with the participants Maintain proper facial expression, body posture and movement. Voice should be pleasant and loud. Maintain speed of delivery Pronounce clearly and distinctly.

Preparation of audience question To involve participants in the presentation different type of questions can be posed. They are Overhead question :What do you think of the benefit of Organic Farming? Direct question : ‘Mr. x, what do you think of the benefit of Organic Farming? Closed question: “Do you agree that organic farming is a boon to Indian agriculture?” Specific question: Specific questions are those for which we expect reply in specific.“When is the date for organizing field day?”

Five “W”s and one “H” Why, Whom, When, Where, What and How Why : Objective(s) of giving the talk Whom : Assess your audience knowledge level, size, socio-economic status etc When : Season, time and duration of the talk Where : Venue, seating arrangement and availability of A-V equipment What : What information you give in your talk How : The way of treating the content
