Organized in 1992 TREA has been an active organization in Texas since We have just celebrated our 20 th anniversary.

TREA: Our Mission Our Mission is to promote quality educational opportunities and experiences for all children from rural public schools in Texas which will enable them to compete in a global society

TREA is Unique

We are affiliated and involved with the National Rural Education Association (NREA) and the National Rural Education Association Coalition (NREAC)

We represent rural Texas schools no matter how large or how small We have a simple rule to determine if a school district is rural If you think you are rural, you are!

We Have A Diverse Organizational Structure Five Officers –serve one term at each position President, President-Elect,Vice President, Treasurer, Immediate Past President Twenty Directors 10-Superintendents 4- ESC Directors 1-University Representative 2- Public School Board Members 2 – Teachers 1- Principal

TREA Foundation TREA Maintains a 501c (3) Tax- Exempt Foundation Foundation operates the Summer Conference and awards student scholarships All Revenue from Business Associate Membership and Education Service Centers Membership is directed to our Foundation to be used for Scholarships and to Operate the Summer Conference

Membership Benefits

NREA Affiliation As a TREA member you also get a basic affiliation with the National Rural Education Association Newsletters and Magazines Notification of special grants and scholarships available for rural educators and students

Representation to Decision Makers We participate in the Small School Coalition (TACS,TAMS,TREA) We work with various as hoc groups on issues that affect our rural membership Regular communications during legislative sessions to keep our members informed and to get them involved on issues Alerts to members to mobilize member efforts to impact legislation

Summer Conference Involves teachers, administrators and board members of rural schools Dynamic Keynote Speakers Relevant Break out sessions Fun and relaxing activities in a major Texas city for the entire family

Student Scholarships We currently provide through the TREA Foundation ten $1,000 scholarships for students who attend a member rural school Awards are based on need, personal achievement and scholarship To receive the award the student must be accepted by a post secondary institution May be used as the recipient sees fit

Legal Service Program Offered by the Powell and Leon, LLP law firm,one of the pre-eminent school law firms in Texas Participation is your option Membership fee in TREA pays for your participation They provide an answer to any legal,school related question as long as no research is required Membership qualifies you for reduced rates and travel expenses and one staff development session (at no extra cost) if you use the firm for your legal business

Public Relations Program Scott and Leslie Milder, who founded Friends of Texas Public Schools and who are experienced in school public relations, offer a reduced rate program exclusively for members of TREA Many times a school superintendent is faced with a highly unusual situation which requires a PR response. Scott and Leslie have handled these delicate situations with very positive results. Our web site contains more information

Institutions- School Districts, Education Service Centers* $ per year for TREA $ for joint TREA/NREA Membership Business Associates* $ per year Other: Individual ($100) Teacher ($35) Student ($15) Retired ($50) Library ($50) * All proceeds from ESCs and Business Associates Memberships go to the TREA Foundation and are used exclusively for Student Scholarships and the Summer Conference
