Socrates 469 BC to 399 BC Born in Athens, questioned authority, “the unexamined life is not worth living.” Encouraged his students to examine their most closely held beliefs using question-answer approach that became known as the Socratic method This encouraged his students to look deeper into concepts.

Plato: 427 BC to 347 BC Pupil of Socrates Wrote: The Republic Ideal Society: one in which each member understands and performs his or her role. Philosophers, warriors & others

Ideal form of Government He felt a philosopher-king should rule. Philosophers should become kings because the love of knowledge, wisdom, and virtue should govern. Power and Wisdom need to be united in one person in order to not have evil in the government.

Aristotle: 384 BC to 322 BC One of greatest persons to influence western thought. Pupil of Plato Book: Politics Ideal Society: one in which everyone is educated to be morally virtuous and all citizens participate in political society.

Ideal Form of Government Government ruled by properly educated members of the middle class. The middle class would be bridge between rich & poor Philosopher/King Relationship: Kings would take advice on ruling from philosophers.
