Poetry Terms Continued

Imagery Imagery is the name of a specific kind of language that evokes the senses in a poem.

Sonnet A sonnet is a poem that has fourteen lines, that is usually in iambic pentameter. There are usually ten syllables per line. These types of poems were made famous by Shakespeare. (We will learn more about sonnets later.)

Rhythm Rhythm is the flow of the poem, which can sometimes be specific in terms of stressed and unstressed syllables. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNX2kxqvjbU

Meter The stressed or unstressed pattern in verse (poetry).

Diction The style in which a poet chooses to speak in the poem- where the voice is coming from.

Connotation Connotation is the implied meaning of a word in poetry that goes beyond what that word actually means or is describing.

Metaphor Do we remember what a metaphor is? To make a solid comparison between two things using “is” or “to be”- this can be a comparison of two unlike things

Metaphor An extended metaphor means that the original metaphor that is used in a poem is used throughout that poem.

Simile Do we remember what a simile is? To make a comparison using “like” or “as”

Speaker The speaker of the poem is the person that is telling the story of the poem. The speaker is not always the author.

Persona Persona Poetry is the use of writing poetry from a different voice that is not your own- it is common to write in the voice of characters, celebrities, etc. and try to tell their stories (Ms. Howard studied this in college!)

Theme We should know this well! What is a theme?

Tone Tone in poetry is a big part of the voice that the poem takes on. A tone could be sarcastic, while the mood, on the other hand, could be somber.

Mood The mood is the overall feel of the poem. The tone the voice takes on can be completely different from the mood of the poem. The mood of a poem could be very happy, even if the voice feels sad.

Point of View This is which view the poem is coming from. It could come from many different places. See persona for further explanation.

Personification Personification is to give humanlike qualities to inanimate objects https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqBZMR83wC g

Denotation Denotation, what a word denotes, is the literal definition of a word.

Haiku A haiku is a Japanese form of poetry that is made of three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. These poems are usually about nature. We will learn more about haikus next week!

Monologue Can someone in theater tell us what a monologue is? A monologue is a dramatic speech that is carried out by one character in a play or poem.
