The British desired to expand their global empire to the west The Cause Westward expansion The British desired to expand their global empire to the west France had already occupied the fertile region of the Ohio River Valley

The Early (Unsuccessful) Battles of the British Pennsylvania – colonel George Washington attempts to remove the French from Fort Necessity in 1754 General Braddock leads on unsuccessful attack on Fort Duquesne in 1755 For the next two years, the British continue to lose against the allied French and Native Americans

The Tide Turns British victories began in 1759 The French Forts Duquesne, Ticonderoga, and Louisbourg were captured The French Montreal surrendered to the British in 1760 The British continue to defeat the French and Indians for three more years

The End of the French & Indian War The war ends with the Treaty of Paris in 1763 Terms of the Treaty of Paris Britain received Canada from France and Florida from Spain France acquired the Caribbean sugar islands of Guadalupe and Martinique Spain got Cuba and the Philippines

The Aftermath Pontiac’s Rebellion The Ottawa and Delaware tribes organized an armed revolt against the British They were unsuccessful, but it made the British realize they needed to inhibit westward expansion The British issued the Proclamation of 1763, which forbade expansion west of the Appalachian Mountains since the region was reserved for the Native Americans Colonies ignored this policy The British are left deep in debt  taxes Colonies are united Outline for the American Revolution

Summary Great Britain and France both wanted a global empire in North America Control over the fertile Ohio River Valley France loses Its absolute government prevented New France from developing by restricting immigration (low population in the French colonies) and economic policies (no money for the war) Britain wins Their colonies were highly populated and they had a powerful navy Treaty of Paris (1763) ends the French and Indian War Great Britain’s navy was seen as the strongest one in the world Britain was left with a very large debt Began taxing the colonies  leads up to the American Revolution The colonists felt a need to separate from Britain and become independent
