Chapter 4 Section 4

3 The French and Indian War 1754-1763
Alliance – a close association of nations or other groups, formed to advance common interests or causes Some of the tribes fought with the British, but most fought against the British. This small war was part of a larger struggle between the 2 countries for control of world trade and power. The French alliances with the Natives allowed them more land and control of larger areas.

4 The British Take Action, cont.
Britain finally came to aid the colonists, after the surprising news that Washington was defeated at Fort Necessity. General Braddock was ordered to take 1400 red- coats and some blue-coats to fight against the French. They were defeated. This fighting in America started a new war in Europe, called the Seven Years’ War. What started out as disastrous for Britain quickly changed for the better with new Secretary of State William Pitt in power for England.

5 The Fall of New France Pitt told colonists that Britain would pay for the war, and ran up enormous debt, which raised the taxes of the colonists in America. Quebec, capital of New France, was thought to be impossible to attack. Gen. Wolfe found a way and Britain took over the capital. The British won battles mostly in the north. The Treaty of Paris of 1763 marked the end of France as a power in North America. N.A. was now divided by Spain & England. France could keep some sugar producing colonies in the West Indies But gave up territory in Canada and lands east of the Mississippi River to Britain

8 Trouble on the Frontier
The British victory dealt a blow to Natives. Chief Pontiac of Ottawa recognized that British settlers threatened the Native American way of life. He hoped to bring the natives together and fight the British as a large group. This was called Pontiac’s War. The Proclamation of 1763 halted westward expansion by settlers at the Appalachian Mountains. This angered speculators who had already bought and invested in land beyond the Proclamation Line. They were angry and began to ignore the Line and claim their land. Speculator – a person who risks money in order to make a large profit. More conflict would soon arise between the British and colonists in North America.
