Mandela Joins the African National Congress Goals of the ANC - To create a free, democratic and multi-racial South Africa 1943- Mandela joined the ANC and worked with friends Oliver Tambo and Walter Sisulu Civil Disobedience campaigns were the approach, but then the Sharpeville Massacre occurred in 1960
