2 Early Years Born Rolihlahla on July 18, 1918 in the tiny village of Mvezo (Transkei, South Africa) Father was a tribal chief who had lost his power First in his family to go to school At age 9, his father died so he went to live with a tribal chief of the Thembu people

5 He worked with the ANC to try and end apartheid in South Africa
At first he used civil disobedience, boycotts, and nonviolent protests, but overtime he supported the ANC’s acts of violence. Why?

6 He was imprisoned at Robben Island for 27 years, but continued to work against apartheid.

I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and achieve.
