2 Apartheid South Africans were legally classified by the color of their skin. The racial classifications were: white black (largest group) Asian colored (mixed race)

3 Racism=Apartheid Apartheid means “separateness”
Black South Africans were not allowed to vote Black South Africans required to carry a pass with them at all times

4 Apartheid Separate schools hospitals beaches libraries drinking fountains restrooms The services and buildings for whites were much better than those for everyone else.

5 Nelson Mandela and the ANC
The African National Congress (ANC)-fight for rights and freedoms of all South Africans. Nelson Mandela was their leader Mandela protested nonviolently and violently Police arrested Mandela He was imprisoned for 27 years.

6 Nelson Mandela While in prison, Mandela continued to fight against apartheid. In a 1964 court appearance, he said: “During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
