Week of Oct. 22 Mr. Matthias’ news 10/22/18 Congratulations to our sixth habit hero - Millicent This week we worked more with words that rhyme. You can have fun in many ways with rhyming games. Practice talking with rhymes once in a while. As I wrote last week, I am trying out a phonics game site called Teach Your Monster to read. Students can go to the following site: https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/u/1946876 Students type in first name (or first name and first initial if they share a name) and start the game. There is also an app for phones and tablets. Star code is:1946876 for my group, but you can set your own account. john.matthias@redclay.k12.de.us

Week of Oct. 22 Mr. Matthias’ news What Are We Learning? Reading - Next week (October 22) I will continue working with beginning and ending sounds. Many students in Kindergarten do not hear the ending sound. It takes a lot of practice. I will start discussing long vowel sounds as well as reviewing short vowel sounds. Sight words so far: a, am, and, can, funny,go I, little, see, the, help, play, away and make. Next week me and three. Writing - We will practice printing capital letters. Journal writing using sounds that can be heard. We will work on putting a space between words and forming a sentences. john.matthias@redclay.k12.de.us

Week of Oct 22 Mr. Matthias’ news Social Studies: We will discuss how we make good choices to be good friends. Math Bridge: Calendar numbers.Order of numbers. Before and after. Counting 1 - 15. Shapes. READING AT HOME: I write this every week. Reading with your child at home is the most impactful activity that you can share with your child. Make it fun. Ask them what words or letters they already know. If you are willing to highlight the words they already know, it makes for a great visual for seeing growth as a reader. Have a wonderful weekend. john.matthias@redclay.k12.de.us

Week of Oct 22 Mr. Matthias’ news Here are some Leader in Me links that you can look at to find out more about the program: https://www.lisd.net/Page/6485 This is a link to see a parent guide if you would like to purchase one for home. https://store.theleaderinme.org/education-books/the-leader-in-me-parent-s-guide I said I would send links to videos of the books I use for large group discussions. Last week was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnyT6kghv-U Next week is another non fiction book titled Life in an Ocean Unfortunately, I have not found an site that shows this story yet. This is a site with book suggestions by level from scholastic: http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/guidedreading/leveling_chart.htm Have a great weekend! john.matthias@redclay.k12.de.us
