What is PBIS? Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive systems approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. District-wide initiative 3 Laura Emphasize key words “proactive, systemic and environment”

School-Wide Systems for Student Success: A Response to Intervention (RtI) Model Academic Systems Behavioral Systems Tier 3/Tertiary Interventions 1-5% Individual students Assessment-based High intensity 1-5% Tier 3/Tertiary Interventions Individual students Assessment-based Intense, durable procedures Tier 2/Secondary Interventions 5-15% Some students (at-risk) High efficiency Rapid response Small group interventions Some individualizing 5-15% Tier 2/Secondary Interventions Some students (at-risk) High efficiency Rapid response Small group interventions Some individualizing Laura So what is this legislation getting at? Basically--- that a support system needs to exist that will provide the support necessary for ALL students to achieve. PBIS is a Response to Intervention model and has addressed many of the social and emotional needs of students as part of its mission. (NOTE: PBIS addresses “externalizers” because behavior is observable; however, it does not yet address issues with “internalizers” as this cannot be assessed through ODRs—this is one of the caveats to saying PBIS delivers SEL standards) Tier 1/Universal Interventions 80-90% All students Preventive, proactive 80-90% Tier 1/Universal Interventions All settings, all students Preventive, proactive Illinois PBIS Network, Revised May 15, 2008. Adapted from “What is school-wide PBS?” OSEP Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Accessed at http://pbis.org/schoolwide.htm 4

Levels and Descriptions of Behavior Support 1. School-wide (Tier 1) Procedures and processes intended for all students, staff, in specific settings and across campus 2. Classroom Processes and procedures that reflect school-wide expectations for student behavior coupled with pre-planned strategies applied within classrooms 3. Target Group (Tier 2) Process and procedures designed to address behavioral issues of groups of students with similar behavior problems or behaviors that seem to occur for the same reasons (i.e. attention seeking, escape) 3. Individual-Student (Tier 2 & 3) Processes and procedures reflect school-wide expectations for student behavior coupled with team-based strategies to address problematic behaviors of individual students Laura The universal tier involves the whole schools as well as each and every classroom—which must be aligned to the school-wide system! Each school may have different specific supports but there must be a system of supports for each tier based on data analyses of the individual school. Adapted from Levels and Descriptions of Behavior Support Peshak-George, Harrower, & Knoster, in press) 5

Supporting Social Competence & 4 PBIS Elements Supporting Social Competence & Academic Achievement OUTCOMES DATA SYSTEMS Supporting Staff Behavior Supporting Decision Making Laura This is a graphic representing the need to articulate clear outcomes; to build the systems to support the staff in trying to achieve the outcomes; to define and provide the necessary data sources and processes necessary for decision-making and problem solving; and to teach staff the practices necessary for them to implement to support student behavior. It is representative of the bringing together of systems thinking with the science of human behavior. PRACTICES Supporting Student Behavior 6

5 School Wide Practices of PBIS Define 3-5 Simple School-wide Expectations (Heart of a BARB) Teach Behaviors identified in Matrix Remind Clear In-the-Moment Reminders (common language) Acknowledgements Daily recognition – not currently in place (4:1ratio) Weekly/quarterly grade-level/whole school celebrations (like Dodgeball) Reteach Classroom procedure for minor problem behaviors Office Discipline Referral for major problem behaviors Pre-correct often Laura Once systems have been addressed and a team is identified, these are universal practices that should become part of the repertoire of the staff as they are interacting with students. 7

School-wide Systems 1. Common purpose & approach to discipline 2. Clear set of positive expectations & behaviors 3. Procedures for teaching expected behavior 4. Continuum of procedures for encouraging expected behavior 5. Continuum of procedures for discouraging inappropriate behavior 6. Procedures for on-going monitoring & evaluation Laura Stress: Although most schools have a written code of conduct or discipline policy-- which is important-- it tends to focus on procedures for processing rule violations (#5 on the slide). Effective school-wide discipline systems have a matching and strong proactive component that teaches and encourages pro-social behavior, and provides an on-going progress monitoring system. The remaining five items are important but difficult to sustain without clear school-wide investments and structures in place. 8
