What is PBIS? Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive systems approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. Basically--- that a support system needs to exist that will provide the support necessary for ALL students to achieve. PBIS is a Response to Intervention model and has addressed many of the social and emotional needs of students as part of its mission. Levels and Descriptions of Behavior Support 1. School-wide (Tier 1) Procedures and processes intended for all students, staff, in specific settings and across campus 2. Classroom Processes and procedures that reflect school-wide expectations for student behavior coupled with pre-planned strategies applied within classrooms 3. Target Group (Tier 2) Process and procedures designed to address behavioral issues of groups of students with similar behavior problems or behaviors that seem to occur for the same reasons (i.e. attention seeking, escape) 3. Individual-Student (Tier 2 & 3) Processes and procedures reflect school-wide expectations for student behavior coupled with team-based strategies to address problematic behaviors of individual students Laura The universal tier involves the whole schools as well as each and every classroom—which must be aligned to the school-wide system! Each school may have different specific supports but there must be a system of supports for each tier based on data analyses of the individual school. Procedures for on-going monitoring & evaluation Laura Stress: Although most schools have a written code of conduct or discipline policy-- which is important-- it tends to focus on procedures for processing rule violations (#5 on the slide). Effective school-wide discipline systems have a matching and strong proactive component that teaches and encourages pro-social behavior, and provides an on-going progress monitoring system. The remaining five items are important but difficult to sustain without clear school-wide investments and structures in place. 8

The side row lists the various environments in the school building (hallway, cafeteria, playground, etc.) where the behaviors are taught, modeled, practiced, and acknowledged. Each of the boxes in the matrix include positively stated phrases about what each of the expectations look like and sound like in each environment. I. This makes it very clear when it is appropriate to send a student to the office or not.

Lessons For each quarter of the school year there will be two to three PBIS lessons taught by teachers in FLEX Lesson plans will be developed by the PBIS Green Team Lessons will be approximately 5 minutes with a specific day pre-identified for teaching the lesson Lessons (electronic and paper) will be provided to staff during one of our monthly faculty meetings each quarter Posters incorporating the lesson topic will be posted throughout the school and available electronically for teachers to post in their classrooms Allison
