Discord in the North Copperheads: People that wanted compromise w/south North having a hard time getting people Gave bounties: Payments Still not enough Established a draft: All men 20-45 had to fight if called Could pay $300 or find someone to take place Riots broke out

Trouble in Confederacy Many believed in State over Federal Hard time getting soldiers Draft Slave owner w/20+ did not have to fight

Economy Good in north Lots of supplies produced for the war Profiteers overcharged the government Poor in the south Tax-in-kind: Farmers had to turn over 1/10th of crops, had little money to spare Few supplies (blockade) Famine struck many
